Southern Maine Hammers Husson to Even Record

GORHAM, Maine -- Southern Maine snapped its three-game losing skid Tuesday afternoon defeating the Husson Eagles 20-6 in a non-conference game at Hannaford Field. The win gets the Huskies back to the .500 level at 3-3 overall. The Eagles slide to 1-4 on the season.

Sophomore Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) paced the Huskies' balanced offense scoring four goals and passing out one assist. Junior Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) added three goals, and classmate Samantha Purcell (Durham, Maine/Lisbon) contribute two goals and two assists.

Juniors Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) and Jess Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomores Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) and Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) had two goals apiece. Sophomore Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) picked up the win in goal making five saves.

For the Eagles, junior Amanda Mora (Stratford, Conn.) and sophomore Haley Huntington (West Gardiner, Maine) led the way with two goals. The Eagles split the goaltending duties with junior Kaleigh Morneau (Twin Mountain, N.H.) playing the first half registering five saves, and rookie Kayla Guerrette (Frenchville, Maine/Wisdom) stopping three shots in the second half.

Forster and Turcotte (two goals) staked the Huskies to a 3-0 lead in the opening six minutes before Mora got the Eagles on the board. Another run of three USM goals from Forster, Purcell and Santo increased the margin to 6-1.

Junior Steph Eaton (PIttston, Maine/Gardiner) scored an unassisted goal and Huntington netted a free-position shot four minutes apart to pull the Eagles back to within three (6-3), but the Huskies used a 4-1 run over the final eight minutes to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.

Southern Maine kept up the offensive surge getting goals from six different players in the first 14 minutes of the second half to open a commanding 16-4 advantage.

Southern Maine will travel to Saint Joseph's College on Thursday (4:30 p.m.). That game will be played at Memorial Field in Portland. Husson travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a game on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
