Golden Bears Drop Home Opener to Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Bloomsburg opened the game with an 8-1 run to spoil Kutztown's home and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener, defeating the Golden Bears 17-6 at Keystone Field.

Megan Schwar (Alpha, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Jillian Spencer (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) scored three goals apiece for KU (2-2, 0-1 PSAC). Schwar had just two goals on the year and Spencer was making her collegiate debut.

JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape) stopped 17 shots in her first start of the year in goal and picked up seven ground balls.

Randy Vite (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodburg) added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

The Huskies (3-2, 1-0 PSAC), however, got six goals from Sam Mazzie and four other players scored two goals each.

Sara Bates made seven saves and allowed just four goals in just under 43 minutes of work.

Maggie Canavan, Lindsay Kupferschmid and Julie Falk had four ground balls each for Bloomsburg.

The Golden Bears trailed 9-2 at the half, but a three goal run in the second half cut the lead to 11-5 with 16:15 to play. BU then scored six straight goals to put the game out of reach.

KU will look to get back in the win column when it travels to Chestnut Hill on Thursday, March 22 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
