St. Mary's Snares the Gophers for Non-Conference Win

St. Mary's City, Md. Senior attacker Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and junior midfielder Emily Shafer (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) each tallied four points as St. Mary's posted a 12-6 non-conference victory over the Goucher Gophers Tuesday afternoon.

Bennett and Shafer each recorded two goals and two assists while junior midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) picked up two goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Lauren Gray (Edgewater, Md./South River) also had a multiple-goal day with two goals while senior attacker Cailey Aburn (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll School) scored once and dished two assists.

Goucher (2-6) struck first at 28:23 before St. Mary's (4-4) rattled off three unanswered goals to stake a 3-1 advantage at 23:31. Senior attacker Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) stopped run by converting on a free position shot to close the gap to 3-2 at 20:05. First-year attacker Megan Essman (Clarksville, Md./ River Hill) and Gray each scored to put the Seahawks up 5-2 at 13:51.

St. Mary's (4-4) went on to score three of the next four goals to own an 8-3 advantage at halftime. Shafer notched all of her four points in the first half while Bennett had two goals and an assist.

Shackelford opened up second half scoring with her second tally of the afternoon before the Gophers scored two consecutive goals to pull within 9-5 at 25:06. Three different St. Mary's players found the back of the net to give the home team a seven-goal cushion at 2:56. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School [Calif.]) tallied the last goal with 23 seconds left for the 12-6 final.

Smith finished the afternoon with two goals to pace the Goucher offense while four other Gophers scored. Junior Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) made 11 stops, scooped up a team-best four ground balls and caused three turnovers for Goucher in goal.

Seahawk senior goalie Colleen Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished the afternoon with 14 saves, including nine in the second half, while adding two ground balls.

First-year defender Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) once again led the defensive effort with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Goucher posted a 12-8 margin in draw controls as first-year midfielder Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) won seven. The Gophers also notched a 32-26 edge in shots while St. Mary's registered a 27-19 advantage in ground balls.

The Seahawks will look to extend their win streak to two on Saturday, March 24 when St. Mary's travels to Marymount (Va.) University (1-5) in Arlington for Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm.
