Abbriano Paces Norwich Past Saint Joseph (Ct.)

NORTHFIELD, Vt. Fueled by another strong offensive game from senior midfielder Kacey Abbriano (Hicksville, N.,Y.), Norwich turned in a sparkling performance in its home opener March 21 with a 20-6 win over St. Joseph's of Connecticut.

The Cadets, moving to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play with their 19th straight league win, picked up where they left off from the previous evening's 20-4 win at Emmanuel. Sophomore midfielder Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) rattled home the first goal less than a minute, and Coach Beth VanParys' squad was off to the races. NU tallied 14 first half goals en route to a 14-2 halftime lead.

Abbriano ended the game with six goals and two assists, tallying all goals and one of the assists in the first half. Senior Mollie Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) came off the bench for a solid three-goal, one-assist effort, while the quartet of senior attacker Suzanne Whitaker (Chelmsford, Mass.), senior attacker Danielle Del Dotto (Andover, Mass.), sophomore defender Miranda Otto (Lakewood, Wash.) and freshman midfielder Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.) each ended with two goals.

The goalkeeping duo of senior Meghan Kennedy (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca Horgan (Topsfield, Mass.) produced seven saves. Abbriano also topped the ground ball chart with seven.

Norwich returns to GNAC play Saturday, March 24, with key early-season trip to Mount Ida. First draw is at 1:00 p.m.
