Cook Nets Hat Trick as St. Mary's Rolls by Marymount

St. Mary's City, Md. With his third hat trick of the season, junior Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) helped lead St. Mary's to its second CAC win of the season, a 14-3 decision over Marymount Wednesday afternoon. Today's win is the third in a row for the Seahawks.

Cook finished the afternoon with four points on three goals and an assist while first-year Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) and middies Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School), Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School), and Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) each scored two goals.

St. Mary's (5-3, 2-0 CAC) rolled out to a 4-0 lead after the first period of play as Love tallied his two goals in the first 15 minutes with senior Brendan Oster (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) assisting on both goals.

The Seahawks owned a 7-0 lead with 4:24 remaining in the first half as the hosts opened up the second quarter with three unanswered goals. Marymount's leading scorer, sophomore Connor Kellogg (Greenwood Village, Colo./Littleton), stopped St. Mary's run with an unassisted goal at 3:57. Tarrant and Lerch each scored in a span of 1:56 to send the Seahawks into the break with a 9-1 advantage.

First-year Michael Mene (Newark, Del./Newark) paced the Marymount (3-4, 0-2 CAC) offense with two goals while sophomore Vince Lodato (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) won nine face-offs and scooped up a game-best five ground balls.

Senior John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex School [Mass.]) started off the third period scoring with a behind-the-back goal at 9:27 off the Cook assist. Mene picked up his first of the day and the Saints' second at 4:31 before Long put the ball in the back of the net at 3:15 for a 12-2 Seahawk lead through three quarters.

St. Mary's outscored the Saints (3-4, 0-2 CAC), 2 to 1, in the last stanza as Oster notched the final goal of the contest off junior Patrick Mull's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) team-leading 19th assist of the season.

Each team won 10 face-offs while junior Justin Harty (Medford Lakes, N.J./Camden Catholic) anchored the Seahawk defensive effort with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. St. Mary's outhustled the Saints 33 to 22 on ground balls while outshooting the visitors 41 to 18.

Senior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) made three saves and had two caused turnovers in 45 minutes before being relieved by junior Ben Wheeler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) and sophomore Zach Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights School. For Marymount, senior Ross Fernandez (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) picked up seven stops in the first half before being replaced.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Saturday, March 24 as the Seahawks welcome Hood College to Seahawk Stadium for Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm. Marymount will travel to DeSales University for its next contest on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
