Catawba Nips Queens on Goal with 42 Sec. Left

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario/Christ the King) scored with 41.9 seconds left to lift host Catawba to a 13-12 win over Queens in action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 8-1. The Royals fall to 4-3.

Artem's goal was the last tally in the see-saw battle that saw the lead change hands five times with seven ties. Artem finished with four goals to pace the Indians. Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Gettysburg) and Freddie Turcio (Guilford, CT/Guilford) each had two goals and an assist, while Cory Losselyong (Lewisville, NC/W. Forsyth) also had two goals. T.C. Whaley (Carlsbad, CA) had three goals for Queens with Corey Geroy (Horseheads, NY) and Jimmy Baker (Prince Frederick, MD) each finding the back of the net twice.

Down 5-4 at the half, Catawba five straight goals to start the third quarter to go on top 9-5 with 8:41 left. Artem had two of the goals in the run. Queens came right back with Baker scoring twice in a run that put the Royals up 11-10 at the end of the quarter.

Artem tied the game at the 11:03 mark and Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) gave the Indians a lead with 7:57 to play. Whaley got a tying goal for Queens with 2:06 remaining, but Catawba won the face-off and kept possession until Artem scored the winner. Catawba was able to win the ensuing face-off and run out the clock.

Queens scored the opening two goals before the Indians tallied three straight to take their first lead early in the second quarter. Queens had three of the final four goals of the half.

Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Stevenson) made 15 saves in goal for Catawba. His counterpart from Queens, Andrew Hyland (Fairfield, CT) stopped 13 shots. Catawba held a 42-40 advantage in shots with Queens edging out the Indians 39-38 in ground balls. Catawba won 15 of the 28 face-offs.

SALISBURY, N.C. After a goal from T.C. Whaley tied things up at 12-12 with 2:06 to go, the Catawba Indians were able to net a goal in the final minute to defeat Queens, 13-12, in non-conference action. The Royals fall to 4-3 on the year, while Catawba now sits at 8-1.

Whaley led the Royals this evening with three goals, while Jimmy Baker and Corey Geroy netted two apiece. Matthew Michael led with two assists. Goalie Andrew Hyland scooped up eight ground balls, and face-off specialist Kenneth Stryker collected five. Hyland also took the loss in the cage after getting 13 stops.

Braden Artem led all on the field with four goals. Cory Losselyong, Steven Ridolfo and Freddie Turcio notched two goals apiece. Gage Mason led on the defensive end collecting five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Kevin Hornik and Derek Young were able to put the Royals ahead, 2-0, in the first before the Indians found two goals of their own tying the game at 2-2.

In the second, the Indians held a 4-3 lead at 8:21 after Turcio found the back of the net for his first goal of the game. Queens' Whaley and Hock would respond with back-to-back goals, and the Royals would head into the locker room with a 5-4 lead at the half.

Catawba came out hot in the third quarter reeling off five goals in a row to go ahead 9-5. Queens would come alive in the latter half of the quarter going on a 6-1 spurt. Baker and Geroy punched two during the run. The Royals held an 11-10 lead heading in to the fourth.

The Indians would score two in the second putting them ahead 12-11 before Whaley blasted a ball into the net tying things at 12-12. However, Artem would tally what would become the game-winner at 41 seconds giving the Royals their third loss of the season.

Queens returns to action at Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for their conference opener.
