Assumption Holds off Molloy for One-Goal Home Win

Worcester, Mass. (March 21) -- Led by a six-goal effort from freshman attack Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa), Assumption held off visiting Molloy by a 12-11 final in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday night. Molloy was receiving votes in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II National Poll.

The Hounds jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter on a goal from Tom Guido (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), but the Lions answered right back to make it 4-3 at the half. Molloy kept up the offensive pressure and took a 5-4 lead midway thru a busy third quarter on the second goal of the game from Sal Geneva.

Neither team led by more than one goal the rest of the way and the game headed into the final minutes tied at 11-11 after a Molloy goal from junior Kenny Lutz. Guido wrapped up the hat trick and the game with 1:53 left as he scored his third goal of the contest to put the Hounds out in front by a 12-11 margin.

Assumption had to fight off a number of Molloy chances at the end as well, but forced a turnover with just seconds remaining to pull out the victory. This marks just the second time in program history that the Hounds have defeated Molloy.

Smith, the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, picked up his second six-goal game of the season and now leads the team in scoring with 18 goals. Lutz and Cameron Walsh each had hat tricks, while Jimmy Davis and Tom Engelhardt with three assists each.

Matt Palubicki (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) picked up his second straight win with 11 saves, while John Grebe made nine saves in the loss.

With the win, Assumption improves to 2-3 overall, while Molloy falls to 4-2 on the season. The Hounds are back in action on Saturday, March 24th as Saint Michael's visits for a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
