SUNY Canton Downs Thomas in Non-Conference Play

Waterville, Maine - Thomas recorded a 19-4 non-conference loss to SUNY Canton Kangaroos Wednesday night at Bill Alfond field on the campus of Colby College. Canton came out strong, scoring six goals on 20 shots in the first period and never looked back.

Kangaroos' attackman Alex Tibbles led all scorers with an eight goal performance. Thomas midfielder Gunnar Shelton held the team high two goals and an assist.

With the loss the Terriers fall to 1-5 (0-0 NAC) on the year, while the Kangaroos improve to 2-3 on the young season.

The first quarter saw Canton out shoot the Terriers 20-6. The Kangaroos jumped out to the quick 5-0 lead until Thomas answered with a goal from Shelton. Both teams each added one more goal to end the first quarter with a 6-2 score. Canton's Tibbles had all 6 goals in the period, while Thomas attackeman Sean Machin added the second goal of the quarter for the Terriers.

The second quarter saw the Terriers offense continue to struggle as the Kangaroos outscored the host team 4-1. The Kangaroos got goals in the second quarter James Kane, Trevor Wight, Jason Thompson, and Tibbles. The Terriers lone goal for the quarter was scored by Erik Tiner II as the Terriers went into halftime trailing 10-3.

In the third quarter Canton scored three seconds into play off of the stick of Trevor Roundpoint. The Kangaroos controlled the period shutting out Thomas and adding scoring six more goals to their lead.

In the fourth, the Terriers out-shot the Kangaroos 13 to 10, but were outscored 3-1. Dan Workman, Devin DeCarr, and Spadaccini were the goal scorers for the Kangaroos in the fourth, while Shelton added the final goal for the Terriers.

Despite a respectable 20 saver performance, goalkeeper Jesse Morkeski shoulders the loss for the Terrier, while Corey Spunk picks up the win for the visiting Kangaroos.

The Terriers next game will be home March 31 at 1:00 p.m. when they take on their first North Atlantic Conference opponent Maine Maritime. The Kangaroos next will host SUNYIT on March 28 at 6:00 p.m.
