Mount Saint Vincent Sinks the Mariners

New London, Conn. Mount Saint Vincent snapped a two-game skid and climbed to within one game of matching the program's single-season record for wins with a 9-4 road victory at Mitchell on Thursday afternoon.

Matt Desimone (Congers, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with four goals, while Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed the game with four assists.

The Dolphins used the strength of a nine goal first half to hold off Mitchell and got an early jump in the game with five tallies in the first 15 minutes. Desimone got the scoring started just over a minute into the game with his first of three first quarter goals.

The Mariners would get on the board early in the second quarter on a tally from Demetre Lyras, but Mount Saint Vincent responded with the final four goals of the first half to carry a commanding 9-1 lead into halftime. Desimone netted his fourth of the game in the second stanza and Dan Cohen (Ardsley, N.Y.) picked up two of his three goals in the second period.

For the second straight game, Mount Saint Vincent was held off the board after halftime and in its last three contests the Dolphins have only mustered one second half tally, being outscored 17-1 over that stretch.

Mitchell got on the board in the first 40 seconds of the third period on a man-up goal from Adam Grillo, but the Mount defense would stiffen and allow just two more markers the rest of the afternoon.

Desimone continued his strong season with his scoring output and now sits second on the team in goals with 18. He also chipped in with three groundballs and a caused turnover for the Mount.

Cohen also had a strong day for the Mount with three tallies and he also collected three groundballs. Cohen also matched the team-high with a pair of caused turnovers. Ajao handed out four of the team's five assists to go along with three groundballs and he was one of five players with two caused turnovers. Ajao now leads the team with 13 helpers on the season.

Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) and Larry Caputo (Hicksville, N.Y.) paced the Mount with five groundballs each, with Pappas also contributing on the defensive end with two of the team's 13 caused turnovers.

Grillo led Mitchell with half of the team's goals and Shane Sullivan handed out a pair of assists. Chris Joy led all players in the game with nine groundballs.

Sophomore net minder Kyle Kalibat (Oceanside, N.Y.) continued his steady season in the cage with 14 saves, including seven in the third quarter. Kalibat also collected a groundball for the Dolphins. Peter Eshenfelder played a solid game for Mitchell with nine stops and a pair of groundballs.

For the game, Mount Saint Vincent was outshot 32-31, while the Dolphins picked up five more groundballs then Mitchell after finishing with 33. Mount Saint Vincent also won nine of the 16 face-offs, with Derek Wilson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) winning all nine.

The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 6-4 on the season. The Dolphins will look for their seventh win of the season on Saturday when they travel to Utica to take on SUNYIT. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
