Babson Tops Kean in Calif. to Snap Losing Streak

WHITTIER, Calif.-Babson snapped a three-game losing streak with a convincing 13-6 victory over Kean (N.J.) in non-conference action this afternoon.

The Beavers salvaged a split of their spring break trip to southern California by taking a commanding 6-1 halftime lead to win for the first time since March 7. The win pushes Babson to 4-3 on the season, while Kean falls to 6-3 with the loss.

Senior Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) each scored three goals and picked up one assist, while senior Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.) tallied twice and added an assist, and senior Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) had a four point day, contributing one goal and three assists to lead Babson. In all, 10 Beavers collected points on the afternoon. Sophomore Richard Cheifitz (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and first-year Dylan Conte (Glen Ridge, N.J.) each netted two goals apiece for Kean.

Babson quickly erased a 1-0 deficit with three goals in the final 7:57 of the first quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. Mallon scored twice in the first, sandwiched around a Patinkin goal on the first of Caruso's assists, all at even strength, to give the Beavers a two-goal advantage after 15 minutes.

The Beavers run continued into the second quarter as they added three more goals and shut out the Cougars for a 6-1 halftime advantage. Sophomore Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal at 11:19 before Caruso scored his only goal of the day, off an assist from senior Jeremy Yudkin (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), with 7:31 remaining in the first half for a four-goal lead. Caruso would then assist on Mallon's second goal of the day to close the scoring with 3:42 to go in the stanza, while the Babson defense held Kean scoreless for the final 25:13 of the first half.

After senior Scott Schachter (Rumford, R.I.) and Schmidt opened the third quarter with even strength goals to push the Beavers lead to 8-1 just three minutes after halftime, Kean rattled off four straight tallies to cut the deficit to 8-5. Two quick goals midway through the stanza from Conte and Cheifitz got the Cougars started before goals 16 seconds apart, by Conte and sophomore Zach Williams (Montclair, N.J.), brought Kean back within three at the 5:02 mark.

The Cougars would get no closer, though, as Babson met the challenge by running off the next five goals to take its biggest lead of the game with 7:35 to go in the game. Two goals from Patinkin and single tallies from junior Mike Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.), Schmidt, and sophomore Mike McStravock (Windham, N.H.) put the game away early in the final quarter.

Junior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made nine saves for Babson and anchored the defensive unit that twice held Kean scoreless for long stretches. Junior Lane Zierten (Washington Township, N.J.) worked into the fourth quarter and made 12 saves for Kean before giving way to sophomore Dino Vitale (Ambler, Pa.), who made four saves in the final 9:26 of the game. The Beavers held a 48-29 advantage in shots, including a 32-15 bulge in shots on goal.

First-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) was once again tremendous, winning 14 of 19 face-offs, while Caruso and first-year Alex Bunick (Millis, Mass.) led the Beavers collecting two ground balls each, respectively. First-year Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) caused a game-high four turnovers for the Beavers.

Both teams return home from the west coast to for their conference openers as Babson will face Mass Maritime next Saturday, March 31 in a 3:00 pm start, while Kean hosts Farmingdale State next Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
