Privateers Drop Skyline Opener to St. Joseph's

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 22, 2012) –Maritime lost its Skyline Conference opener at Reinhart Field Thursday night to St. Joseph's of Long Island by the final score of 18-6. The defeat drops the Privateers record to 1-2 (0-1 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-5 (4-1 Skyline) with the win.

Senior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) was Maritime's leading scorer with five goals and one assist, while freshman Tessa Jardine (Valley Steam, N.Y./Waterford) chipped in with a goal and an assist. The Privateers also had goals by senior Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and sophomore Meghan White (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury).

Brady, Jardine and Saporito each had a team-high three groundballs apiece, while Brady's three caused turnovers led the team. Freshman Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward) had a team-high four draw controls. In goal, freshman Jamie Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) recorded 10 saves in the losing effort.

Maritime fell behind by the score of 10-1 with 6:48 to go in the first half, but then stormed back to within four goals, 10-6, with five goals in five minutes. St. Joseph's scored the next three goals to start the second half before the Privateers got two back to make the score 13-8, but the visitors finished the scoring with three straight goals.

St. Joseph's was led by Lisa Terry (Manorville, N.Y.), who scored seven goals. Senior Jackie Myers (Coram, N.Y.) recorded two goals and two assists. Terry and Caitlin Webber (Eastport, N.Y.) both had four groundballs, apiece, while Webber led all players with eight draw controls. Amanda D'Onofrio (Centereach, N.Y.) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Between the pipes, Erin O'Connor (Nesconset, N.Y.) got the start and made two saves before being replaced at halftime by Colleen Fitzimons (Commack, N.Y.), who made one save to preserve O'Connor's win.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when they travel to New Jersey to take on Ramapo College. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Roadrunners' Turf Field.
