RPI Takes Non-Conference Tilt from Castleton

TROY, N.Y. Sophomore Marissa Page tallied a game-best five goals and seven other players found the back of the net as RPI defeated Castleton State, 16-6, in non-conference action at Renwyck Field. It was the season home opener for the Engineers, who are now 4-0 on the season. The Spartans slipped to 2-3 in the loss.

Rensselaer set the tone early as sophomores Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) and Julia Wright (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored in the first four minutes. Castleton State rallied and tied things a 2-all as sophomores Sarah Clark (Guilford, VT/Brattleboro) and Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, NH/Exeter) each fired one in, but the Engineers gained momentum seconds later with the first of Page's (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) five goals and a three more for the home team.

Page added two goals over the four-tally stretch that saw RPI holding a 6-2 lead with 19:39 to play in the first half. Clark fired back for the Spartans off a feed from rookie Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls), but senior Madeline Sisson's (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) second of the game put Rensselaer back up by four and the Engineers headed into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

Senior Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) pulled the Spartans to within two (7-5) to open the second half, but the Engineers quickly countered within seconds as Page shot one of eight straight RPI goals in for a 15-5 lead.

Rensselaer saw Page add two more tallies during the span, while Colitz, junior Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph), sophomores Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY/South Colonie) and Michelle Denny (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) and rookie Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) each notched a goal.

Castleton State tried to get back into it, but a 10-goal differential and running time cut into their chances late in the game. Sophomore Jennilee Mark (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) made it a 15-6 game with 2:12 remaining, but Denny capped the scoring in the final two minutes for the victory.

In addition to Page, Sisson added two goals and two assists, while Colitz had three tallies. Wakefield had a goal and two assists, while Denny added two goals and an assist. In net, junior Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) moved to 4-0 with 10 saves, including a number of key stops on Castleton State's free position opportunities in the second half.

The Spartans saw Clark and Flodstrom each finish with two goals. Mark and Mazzola netted the other two tallies. Between the pipes, junior Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, RI/Portsmouth) played 54:30 minutes of action, stopping six shots. She was relieved by rookie Kelsey MacDonald (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), who did not stop any shots over 5:30 minutes.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday as they host SUNY Potsdam at Renwyck Field (3:00 pm). Castleton State hosts Skidmore on Monday (4:00 pm).
