Mount St. Mary's Tops Robert Morris in NEC Opener

EMMITSBURG, MD. Hannah Gutcher (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) notched her first three collegiate goals to lift Mount St. Mary's past Robert Morris 12-8 in the NEC opener for both teams on Friday.

Gutcher gave the Mount (2-7, 1-0 NEC) the lead it would not relinquish with her first career marker at 10:57 for a 1-0 lead and then found the twine at 32:54 and 45:21 to notch her first collegiate hat trick and help Mount St. Mary's to improve to 10-0 in NEC openers in Emmitsburg.

Erin Seipp (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory) added a career-high three goals and two assists while Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) found the twine four times in the winning effort.

Erin Mossop paced the Colonials (2-7, 0-1 NEC) with three goals and MacKenzie Lawler dished out three assists. Talia Waskowicz and Colleen O'Donnell each registered two goals in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the advantage and used a huge second half to down Robert Morris and improve to 12-3 in NEC openers.

Gutcher gave the Mount the 1-0 lead when she found the twine for the first time in her career at 10:57. Seipp then found the back of the net unassisted at 12:58 for a 2-0.

The two teams then traded goals with Mossop (18:45) and Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) (21:33) each finding the twine before Waskowicz (223:12) while Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) (27:03) exchanged free-position goals to maintain the two-goal margin. Seipp gave the Mountaineers a 5-2 lead at halftime when she found the twine unassisted with 25 seconds left in the stanza.

After Mossop got the scoring started in the final frame at 31:02, Mount St. Mary's rolled off the next four tallies and six of the next seven to grab an 11-4 lead.

Semler set up Larrimore at 31:34 to start the spurt before Lyles connected with Gutcher at 32:54. Larrimore capped the 4-0 run with consecutive scores at 36:27 and 37:09 for a 9-3 lead.

O'Donnell momentarily halted the run at the 40-minute mark, but Seipp (44:56) and Gutcher (45:21) each found the back of the net to complete their first career hat tricks and give the Mount an 11-3 advantage.

Robert Morris scored four unanswered goals to trim the margin to 11-8 thanks to goals by Courtney Sicinski (46:17), Mossop (48:50), Waskowicz (50:27) and O'Donnell (53:56). In last season's regular season meeting, the Colonials rallied from a 12-8 deficit for a 15-12 win but Larrimore sealed the win in 2012 with her fourth score of the day off a feeder from Seipp at 58:26.

Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made six saves for the Mountaineers while Kaitlin Pentz had five saves for Robert Morris.

Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) paced the Mount St. Mary's defense with three caused turnovers, three draw controls and two ground balls while Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) added two caused miscues, four draw controls and a ground ball. Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) posted four ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control in the win.

The Mount returns to action at home against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday. Match time is 1:00 p.m.

EMMITSBURG, Md. March 23, 2012 Robert Morris fell to Mount St. Mary's 12-8 on Friday afternoon in the Colonials' first Northeast Conference action of the year.

Defending Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Erin Mossop (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) led Robert Morris with three goals for her first career hat trick while sophomore MacKenzie Lawler (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) tallied three assists in the loss.
