Spartans, McDougall Earn First Win vs. Johnson State

CASTLETON, Vt. - Castleton State received at least one point from 11 different players en route to its first win of the season, 20-3 over Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The win is also the first for Head Coach Bo McDougall as Castleton improves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Johnson State falls to 0-2, 0-1.

Freshman Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt.) led the Spartan attack with a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. A.J. Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Evan Tucker (Rising Sun, Md.) and Cam Ormiston (Wakefield, R.I.) each netted three scores and Brian McCarthy (Johnson, Vt.) had a game-high three assists to go along with a single marker.

Johnson State was led by a pair of Alex Petti (East Greenwich, R.I.) scores.

Davidson and Groot accounted for the first seven Spartan goals, as the duo traded tallies in the first period to stake Castleton to a 4-0 lead entering the first intermission. Davidson then opened the second with three-straight goals over the first five minutes to push the Spartan lead to 7-0.

Tucker potted two-straight goals, and Ormiston added his first to extend the margin to 10-0 before Nash Garceau (North Haven, Conn.) put the Badgers on the board with just three tenths of a second remaining in the opening half.

The Spartans reeled off the first eight goals after halftime including another from Groot with 13:12 left in the third period and one from Alex Brands (Woodstock, Vt.) just eight seconds later on a great individual effort off the face-off.

Petti scored with three minutes left in the third period, but Castleton answered with another and entered the final stanza with a healthy 19-2 lead.

Castleton controlled possession throughout the contest winning 20 of 26 face-offs and limiting the Badgers to just a 13 for 28 performance on clearing attempts. The Spartans held a hefty 70-26 edge in ground balls and outshot their guests 45-17.

Brands led the defensive charge for the Spartans with 10 ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while Alex Denny (Adams Center, N.Y.) was 18 for 23 in the face-off circle, corralled 10 ground balls and even potted his first-career goal.

Nik Holm (Amherst, Mass.) had a team-high five ground balls for the Badgers, while Maxxwell Connolly (Rollinsford, N.H.) caused a game-high three turnovers.

Zach Jerome (Waterford, Conn.) played the first 54 minutes in between the pipes for Johnson State, turning away 11 shots before giving way to Ryan Belen (Northvale, N.J.) who did not face a shot over the final six minutes.

Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) picked up the win in net for Castleton making five saves and allowing one goal over 35 minutes of play. Tom Manley (Londonderry, N.H.) relieved and made two saves over the final 25 minutes.

Castleton will travel to Hartwick on Tuesday for a 3:00 pm non-conference match-up.

Johnson State heads to Rivier tomorrow for a 1:00 pm face-off.
