Piroli Leads Brown Over Vermont for Victory

BURLINGTON, Vt. Nick Piroli scored four goals and Brown outscored Vermont 8-2 in the second half to earn a 14-5 victory in non-conference action at Virtue Field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Geoff Worley led the Catamounts with five points on three goals and two assists, as they fall to 1-7 on the year.

Brown (3-3) led 6-3 at the half and 9-5 going into the fourth quarter, before scoring the final five goals of the contest. The Bears are now 7-0 all-time against Vermont.

The Catamounts controlled play early on, keeping the ball locked deep in the Brown end of the field before Worley earned his first of the day 3:53 in with an unassisted tally. The Bears responded with the next five scores to take a 5-1 lead after Piroli's second with 13:34 to go before the half.

Vermont scored the next two as junior Drew Philie took a feed from Worley and fired top shelf for a man-up goal that cut it to a three-goal game 3:01 before halftime. Worley then earned his second with an assist going to Philie just 1:26 later.

The Catamounts had a chance to cut their deficit to one just before the half as they called a timeout with possession and 22 seconds to go. UVM failed to convert though and Brown took it the other way and Piroli reached a hat trick and scored with 1.8 seconds to go to make it 6-3 Bears at the half.

Vermont opened the second half with Philie scoring with the man advantage on an assist from Worley that cut it to 6-4 just 35 seconds in. Brown answered by netting eight of the final nine goals in the contest, including the next three after the Cats cut it to a two-goal game. Worley wrapped up his hat trick with 2:06 left in the third, with freshman Mac Hall earning an assist.

Senior David Barton made 11 saves in goal for Vermont, while Will Round stopped eight shots for the visitors, who owned a 39-30 shot advantage for the game. With two assists on the day, Worley moved into sole possession of third place all-time at Vermont in the category as he now has 75 for his career.

The Catamounts return to action next Saturday when they open America East play at Stony Brook starting at 1:00 p.m.

Burlington, Vermont - Freshman Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) scored a career high four goals to lead eight different Brown goal scorers in the Bears' 14-5 victory over Vermont Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field. The Bears evened their record at 3-3 on the season with the win, while the Catamounts fell to 1-7.

Piroli added an assist to his four goals to finish with a career best five points. Sophomore Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) and junior Johnny DePeters (Woodbury, CT) each netted two goals for the Bears. Senior captain Parker Brown (San Francisco, CA) had three assists to go with his goal.

Sophomore Tommy Capone (Watertown, NY) dominated the face-off X, winning 11 of 18 face-offs, while picking up eight ground balls. Sophomore goalie Will Round (St. Lebanon, PA) was solid in the Brown net with eight saves.

Vermont's Geoff Worley had three goals and two assists, while Drew Philie added two goals for the Catamounts.

After Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the game's opening minute, Brown took control on consecutive first quarter goals by Piroli, senior Parker Brown and Hurster to lead 3-1 after the opening quarter.

Hurster and Piroli completed Brown's 5-0 burst with goals in the opening 1:26 of the second quarter to give the Bears a 5-1 advantage. Vermont made a mini-run at the Bears on goals by Philie and Worley late in the second quarter to pull to within two goals, 5-3, but Piroli's third goal of the game with one second left in the half was a crushing blow to the Catamounts' comeback bid, giving Brown a 6-3 lead at intermission.
