Maritime Roughed Up by Potsdam

TROY, N.Y. (March 24, 2012) Maritime lost to non-conference opponent Potsdam St. on Saturday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Upstate New York by the final score of 18-7. The loss drops the Privateers to 1-8 on the season, while the Bears improve to 3-1.

Maritime was led by senior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), who had a team-high three points with a goal and two assists. Freshman Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored twice for the Privateers, while junior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) had a goal and an assist. Junior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and freshman Robert LaLena (North Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) were the other goal scorers, while sophomore Wess Johnson (Elign, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) picked up an assist.

On defense, senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), junior Joe Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and freshman Ed Fargo (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) each had a team-high five groundballs. Tonn caused four turnovers. In goal, junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) got the start and made 14 saves in just over 54 minutes of action.

The game started with the Privateers scoring twice and then taking a 3-2 lead at 2:57 of the first. Potsdam fought back to take a 5-4 lead at 9:29 of the second and brought a narrow 8-5 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bears completely owned the second half, scoring four times in the third and six in the fourth to earn the win.

Senior Peter Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) led all players with five points (three goals and two assists), while junior Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and three assists and sophomore Jared Flath (Dexter, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists. Senior Ryan Paparella (Whitesboro, N.Y.) also had a hat trick with three goals. In goal, senior Mike Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y.) made seven saves in 51.5 minutes for the victory.

Maritime returns to action Wednesday night, when the Privateers play host to Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

TROY, N.Y.-SUNY Potsdam (3-1) used a big second half to pull away from Maritime, 18-7, in a game played at RPI on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Pete Pike (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with three goals and two assists, while junior attackman Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) (1g, 3a) and sophomore midfielder Jared Flath (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) (2g, 2a) contributed four points each.

The Privateers got off to a quick start and led 2-0 three minutes into the contest. Senior midfielder Steve Tupper (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) got Potsdam on the board at 9:05 of the first quarter and Pike evened the score four minutes later. Maritime grabbed their final lead of the contest with 2:57 left in the opening 15 minutes. Tupper tied the game with 58 seconds on the clock and sophomore midfielder Matt Donovan (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) gave the Bears their first lead 15 seconds later.

The Privateers pulled even with Potsdam one final time at 9:35 of the second quarter, but Potsdam closed the half on a 4-1 run. The Bears got goals from Flath, junior midfielder Pat Morrill (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), freshman midfielder Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) and junior midfielder Mike Faltisco (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) during the stretch and led 8-5 at the break.

Potsdam opened the second half with two goals from Pike and senior captain Ryan Paparella (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) and the Bears extended their lead to 12-6 after 45 minutes.
