Hampden-Sydney Outgunned by No. 14 Maroons

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The #14 Roanoke College Maroons scored five or more goals in three of four quarters to defeat Hampden-Sydney, 21-13.

Roanoke took little time to establish control of the game as they scored four of the games first five goals less than five minutes in to the contest. Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) scored the next goal to cut the lead to 4-2, but Roanoke scored four of the last five goals of the first quarter to lead 8-3 after 15 minutes of play.

ROanoke opened the second quarter scoring at the 10:40 mark but would not find the back of the net for the remainder of the half. Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) scored at 9:11, and Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) finished a man-up opportunity at 5:24 to make it a 9-5 game at the half.

The Maroons third quarter was much the same as the first, scoring seven goals while holding Hampden-Sydney to two to take a 16-7 lead going in to the final quarter.

Roanoke scored 31 seconds into the fourth quarter, but then the Tigers offense came alive. Martin scored a minute later followed by two straight goals from Armstrong to make it a 17-10 game with 8:49 remaining. Mavromatis and Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored the next two goals to continue the run and make it just 17-12 with 6:37 to go. Roanoke's Richard Lachlan ended the Tigers run with a goal just 24 seconds later, and then the Maroons scored three goals in less than a minute to quell any hopes of a miraculous Tigers comeback.

Mavromatis had a game-high seven points courtesy of a game-high five goals and two assists. Martin and Armstrong each had three scores while Hawthorne found the back of the net twice. Nate Norbo (Waterford, VA/Loudon Valley) had game-highs of 12 groundballs and four caused turnovers while Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Alpharetta) won 13 of 28 face-offs with seven groundballs.

Jeff Keating posted three goals and three assists for Roanoke while Lachlan and Joey Coretti each had three goals. Max Satossky won 19 of 32 face-offs with 11 groundballs while Mike Hardon recorded 15 saves.

Hampden-Sydney held a 47-37 advantage in groundballs while Roanoke won 21 of 37 face-offs.

Hampden-Sydney will travel to Greensboro College on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm contest.

FARMVILLE -- Roanoke scored over 20 goals for the first time this season in a 21-13 victory over Hampden-Sydney in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday afternoon at Fulton Field. The Maroons, ranked #14 in the country, improve to 5-3 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC. The Tigers, who received votes in this week's national poll, slip to 3-4, 1-1 in conference play.

The Maroons opened the first quarter with an 8-3 lead as Brayden Gerrie and Joey Coretti led the charge. Then played slowed down as the Tigers controlled the tempo, scoring two of only three goals to end the half with a four-goal deficit, 9-5.

Roanoke, who scored over 20 goals for the first time since Colorado College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last spring, outscored Hampden-Sydney, 7-2 to take control.

With the score 17-8 in the final period, the Tigers tallied four unanswered goals to close to within five. But the late surge was too late as the Maroons won their 22nd conference game in the last 23 outings. Richard Lachlan ended the Tigers run with a goal just 24 seconds later, and then the Maroons scored three goals in less than a minute to end the threat.

Jeff Keating led Roanoke with three goals and three assists. Coretti and Lachlan each totaled three goals. Max Satossky collected 11 groundballs to lead the Maroons and won 19 of 32 face-offs.
