Purple Knights Win at Assumtion with Stout Defense

Worcester, Mass. (March 24) -- On Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium, Assumption fell to visiting Saint Michael's by a 10-3 final in Northeast-10 Conference action. Saint Michael's now holds a 22-0 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1990.

Assumption fell behind by a 3-0 margin early before Tim Roy (Avon, Conn./Avon) put the Hounds on the board with an even-strength goal in the final minutes of the first quarter for a 3-1 score. The second quarter belonged to Saint Michael's as Marty Vanzo scored three goals in that period alone to make it a 7-1 score at the half. The Purple Knights pushed the lead to as high as 10-1 before two late Assumption goals made it a 10-3 final.

Matt Palubicki (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) made seven saves in the loss, while Chris DeMairo had six saves in his fifth win of the season.

Assumption falls to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael's has now won four straight and sits at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Assumption is now on a two-game road trip as the Hounds travel to Pace and Franklin Pierce for a pair of Northeast-10 Conference games.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) netted four goals, and Saint Michael extended its winning streak to four games with a 10-3 victory at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium on Saturday.

The Purple Knights, who are receiving votes toward this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds slipped to 2-4 and 1-1.

Vanzo finished with his four goals and an assist all prior to halftime, while sophomore Connor Glackin (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) tallied the first two markers of the game. Senior Kevin Hunt (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) had a goal and two assists, and classmate Andrew Buccellato (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) saw time in his first contest of the season, recording a goal and a helper to push his career point total to 99. Senior Peter Hanson (Andover, Mass./Andover) keyed his team's stout defensive effort with seven ground balls and six caused turnovers, while sophomore Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 7 of 11 on draws. Classmate Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made six saves.

Three players scored for Assumption, while sophomore Matt Palubicki (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) made seven saves and picked up seven ground balls.

Glackin tallied twice in 48 seconds to make it 2-0 by 10:35 of the opening quarter, and Vanzo played a role in each of the Purple Knights' next five goals to provide his team with a 7-1 cushion at halftime. His opening tally was countered by a Greyhound marker before he netted a pair in eight seconds during the second period, creating a 5-1 margin at 6:29. Vanzo assisted Buccellato 1:26 later and took a Hunt feed for a man-up marker at 2:16.

After a scoreless third stanza, Saint Michael's extended its scoring run to seven consecutive tallies by potting the first three goals of the fourth. Senior Paul Tortora Jr. (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and sophomore Tim McDonald (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) recorded goals 46 seconds apart early in the stanza, and Hunt scored at 6:10. The Greyhounds tripled their scoring total with a pair of markers in the final 4:04.

The Purple Knights return home to face Bentley University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
