Eighth-Ranked Dickinson Races by Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Eighth-ranked Dickinson raced out to a 6-1 lead before Ursinus cut the deficit to three at 6-3, but, the Red Devils (8-1, 2-0 Centennial) fended off the rally in an 11-4 win over the Bears (5-3, 1-2 Centennial)

Ursinus was led by two goals from Freshman attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) while freshman midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and sophomore midfielder Dylan Spangenburg (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) each contributed one. Stratton and freshman attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) each added two assists.

Ursinus had trailed 6-1, before Weber scored with 25 seconds left on an extra-man goal from Stratton. Stratton assisted on the next goal by Spangenberg 34 seconds into the third quarter.

Ward Gruppo had three goals for Dickinson, with Sam Greenberg scoring two and Matt Cherry taking a goal and an assist.

Sophomore faceoff specialist Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had two ground balls and was 8 for 15 on faceoffs on the day. Freshman defender Bob Harding (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) had a team-high four ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Jimmy Stanley (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) had three caused turnovers.

In goal, junior T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./St. Mark's) had six saves in the loss. Senior goalkeeper Matt Columbini (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) played in the latter part of the second quarter.

Greg Hanley made 11 saves for Dickinson in the win.

Ursinus will travel to Georgetown University in Washington D.C. to face off against Lynchburg on Wednesday night. This will mark the third ranked team Ursinus has faced this season.

(Collegeville, Pa.) Dickinson College , ranked eighth in the latest USILA Coaches' Poll, improved to 2-0 in the Centennial Conference and 8-1 overall, posting an 11-3 win at Ursinus on Saturday.

Senior captains Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) sandwiched a pair of goals around a score from Mark Stratton to give the Devils a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Gruppo tallied an unassisted mark with 12:20 on the clock and Abramson answered Stratton's tally with 2:03 remaining in the period.

Gruppo found the net 10 seconds earlier in the second, scoring at the 12:30 mark to stretch the lead to 3-1. The lead would grow to 6-1 behind three more unassisted goals as Brett Parker (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's), Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) and Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) put themselves in the scoring column.

The Bears capitalized on an extra-man opportunity as Stratton fed Jake Weber to cut the lead to 6-2 with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.

Ursinus came out fired-up, scoring in the opening 34 seconds to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Devils would respond, scoring three goals in a span of 2:31 to hold a 9-3 advantage at the 8:37 mark of the third quarter.

Gruppo struck with his third goal of the game at the 6:43 mark and Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) closed out the scoring for the Devils, finishing an assist from Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) with 2:32 on the clock.

Stratton would strike again with 1:24 remaining for the final of 11-4. He finished the day with two goals and two assists to lead Ursinus (5-3, 1-2). T.J. Magnani made six saves on the afternoon.

Gruppo tallied the hat-trick to lead the way for Dickinson as the Red Devils improve to 8-1 and 2-0 in conference play. The Devils had 10 players in the scoring column. Cherry added a goal and an assist, ranking him tied for eighth in career assists with 52.
