Oswego State Starts Season with Win at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. Oswego State (1-0) opened the second half with six consecutive goals to break open a game en route to a 16-11 season-opening victory over Morrisville (1-3) Saturday afternoon. Rachael Raffa (Sr., Kings Park, N.Y.) paced the Lakers with seven goals, while Erin Cummings (Sr., Valley Cottage, N.Y) recorded three goals and three assists.

Morrisville's Hilary Hartnett scored the first of her four goals on a free position shot 32 seconds into the game before Oswego State's Corinne Marsh (So., Endwell, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot of his own over a minute later to trigger a 4-0 run by the Lakers.

The Mustangs responded with two goals to pull to within one goal at 4-3. Both squads exchanged scores until Cummings found the back of the cage for her second marker with 5:36 left in the half. Raffa followed up with a pair of goals to put the Lakers ahead 9-5 with three minutes before the break. Morrisville tallied two more markers to go along with another Raffa goal to make the score 10-7.

Oswego State started the second half on fire, as head coach Brandi Lusk's squad received five goals from five different players over the first ten minutes of the frame to give the Lakers a sizable 15-7 advantage. During the stretch, Cummings scored a goal and handed out three assists. Kasey Kuzma (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) tacked on another score with 9:56 remaining in the contest.

Morrisville closed out the game with four goals to account for the final score of 16-11.

Marsh finished with two goals for Oswego State, while Courtney Cosentino (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) registered two goals and Stephanie Cronk (Jr., Endwell, N.Y.) added another marker with two assists. Michelle Ruskey (Jr., Deerfield, N.Y.) also contributed one assist. Raffa also led the visitors with four ground balls.

In the cage, Laker Ashlee Engel (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) posted 18 saves on 37 Mustang shots for the win. Morrisville goalie Danielle Puzio tallied nine saves on 29 shots.

Oswego State will travel to Potsdam to face Clarkson on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
