Washington & Jefferson Rally Falls Short at Wittenberg
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg started both halves strong and held off a late Washington & Jefferson rally to earn a 12-9 women's lacrosse victory over the Presidents on Saturday evening.
The Tigers (3-3) scored the first four goals of the match during the opening four minutes and 24 seconds. W&J fought back to close to within 6-5 at halftime after junior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) netted three first-half goals.
Wittenberg once again stormed out of the gate in the second half with five of the first six goals to increase its lead to 11-6. Five different Tigers scored goals which put the hosts in front by five with 11:54 remaining.
W&J senior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) scored back-to-back goals during a three-minute span to bring the deficit down to 11-8 with 6:52 left to play.
Jennifer Close then scored for the Tigers at the 2:39 mark, but senior midfielder Liz Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School) answered for W&J a minute later. Washington & Jefferson was unable to find the back of the net again and saw its two-game win streak come to an end.
