Cyclones Open Conference Play with Win at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. (March 24, 2012) - Centenary opened conference play with an 11-9 victory over the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Saturday.

After the Mighty Macs jumped on the board early, Robert Nuzzolese (Woodbury, NY, Syosset) posted back-to-back goals in a six minute span to put the Cyclones up 2-1. The first goal came after Cameron Gunn (Johnson City, NY, Johnson City) scooped up a groundball to dish out to Nuzzolese for the score. Nuzzolese's second came off a failed clearing attempt by the Mighty Macs with the help of an assist by Connor Nolan (Hillsborough, NJ, Immaculata).

In the second quarter, the Cyclones took advantage of a quick goal on an extra-man opportunity when Nuzzolese found the back of the net from yet another Nolan pass to put them up 3-1. Coming out of a big timeout, the Mighty Macs attacked right back with four goals in less than five minutes to put them back on top 5-3 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Luckily the Cyclones had an answer of their own as they came back with three consecutive goals to take back the lead 6-5 thanks to single goals by Gunn, Nuzzolese, and Joshua Caven (Yardley, PA, Pennsbury) to bring them to a 6-5 advantage entering the half.

The third quarter started out quiet, but Nuzzolese quickly ended that with yet another goal at 7:37 thanks to another Gunn assist, but the Mighty Macs answered only a minute and a half later with a goal to bring the score to 7-6 moving into the fourth quarter.

The Mighty Macs seemed to dominate early on in the fourth quarter with two back-to-back goals in less than a minute, but the Cyclones responded back with yet another trifecta of goals by Gunn, Nuzzolese, and Caven to take a 10-8 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Immaculata was able to bring it back to within a goal as they found the net with 7:50 left, but once again the Cyclones were able to answer right back when Connor Nolan (Hillsborough, NJ, Immaculata) tacked on another Cyclone goal, this time taking the assist from Nuzzolese, to give Centenary an 11-9 victory over the Mighty Macs for their first conference win of the year.

Nuzzolese finished the game with six goals and an assist, scoring 6-8 of his shots on goal for the Cyclones while also picking up three groundballs. With his goal and four assists, Nolan extends his streak to at least one of each to six on the season.

With the win, the Cyclones improve to 2-4 on the year, including a 1-0 conference mark, and look to improve that on Wednesday when they travel to Gwynedd-Valley, Pa. to take on Gwynedd-Mercy at 7:00 pm.
