Three Hat Tricks Pace Mount St. Mary's Past Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. (March 24, 2012) -Three players recorded hat tricks as Mount St. Mary's raced past Michigan, 15-6, in action at Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Twins Brett and Bryant Schmidt each had three goals while Christian Kellett also added a three-goal game to lead the Mount offense at Michigan. Junior Andrew Scalley rebounded from being held off the scoresheet for the first time in his career by posting a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists.

Scalley's seven points paced the offense while Brett and Bryant Schmidt added three goals and one assist each. Brett Schmidt extended his goal-scoring streak to 20 games while he has scored two or more goals in each of the past nine games. Anthony Golden added a pair of goals with Connor Carey and Mike Adkins also finding the back of the cage on the day.

In goal, Chris Klaiber made nine saves to earn the victory. Jon Marsalese won 14 of 20 face-offs on the day while Scalley picked up a team-high six ground balls.

After Bryant Schmidt opened the scoring, Michigan scored three unanswered goals to grab a 3-1 advantage. The Mount, however, scored two times in the final 51 seconds of the first quarter to even the score at 3-3. Bryant Schmidt's second goal with 51 seconds left was followed by a goal from Anthony Golden with just three seconds left in the quarter.

The Mount (3-4) scored the first four goals of the second quarter to take control of the game. Kellett started the streak when he converted a Bryant Schmidt pass for his first goal of the day. Brett Schmidt and Adkins scored just over a minute apart and Brett Schmidt capped the streak to give the Mount a 7-3 lead with 8:57 left in the half. The teams exchanged goals from there as the Mount held an 8-4 lead at the half.

Carey, Scalley, Kellett and Bryant Schmidt scored for the Mount in the third quarter to stretch the margin to 12-4 and the Mountaineers cruised to the victory from there.

The Mount opens Northeast Conference on Saturday, March 31, with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Quinnipiac. The game is a rematch of last year's inaugural NEC title game won by the Mount, 14-9.

Game Notes: Michigan is in its inaugural season of men's lacrosse ... Brett Schmidt leads the Mount with 17 goals and 23 points this season ... Scalley is now second on the squad with 20 points (9g, 11a) ... The 15 goals scored by the Mount match a season-high ... The Mount defeated VMI 15-4 on March 3rd.
