Robert Morris Scores Final Three to Edge Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Robert Morris' women's lacrosse team scored the final three goals to come from behind and take a pivotal Northeast Conference matchup with Monmouth Sunday afternoon at Kessler Field.

Monmouth (2-8, 1-1 NEC) scored four unanswered goals to erase an early second half deficit and take a 8-6 lead with 12:55 to play in regulation but could not keep the pressure on RMU (3-7, 1-1 NEC), who scored the final three goals of the game for the win. Sam Lillo's (Short Hills, N.J./Milburn) third goal of the game gave the Hawks the two goal lead.

RMU's Erin Mossop cut the lead to one with 11:09 to play on a free position goal. Monmouth, who held possession for much of the remaining time, could not get another shot past Colonial goaltender Kaitlin Pentz who made seven of her eight saves in the final frame. With 1:56 remaining RMU goals leader Talia Waskowicz scored the equalizer then netted the game-winner with 13 seconds remaining.

Lillo scored the first goal of the second half to tie the game at 4-4 on a free position shot but Mossop scored back to back to goals to put the visitors up 6-4. Monmouth controlled play for next nine minutes with sophomore Kaleigh Gibbons (Candia, N.H./Central/Robert Morris) scoring twice and assisting on an Alex Marino (Howell, N.J./Freehold) goal during that span. Lillo's final goal gave the Hawks a two goal advantage before the Colonials scored the final three. Robert Morris struck first with Mossop goal just 1:15 into the game on a free position shot. The Colonials expanded their lead six minutes later with a MacKenzie Lawler goal before the Hawks evened it up. Taylor King (Berywn, Pa./Conestoga) got her second goal of the season after taking a feed from MU assist leader Gibbons. Marino added a goal 2:03 later to tie the two before the teams traded goals to even the scoring at 3-3. Mossop scored with 3:14 left to give RMU a 4-3 advantage going into halftime.

Monmouth held a 23-19 advantage in shots but the stat sheet was even for the most part. Each team had 15 ground balls and 14 turnovers while fouls were 29-27 MU. Goalie Katie Donohoe (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross Secondary) made four saves in net while Gibbons led the team with four pints on two goals and two assists. Lillo finished with three goals and had three of Monmouth's seven draw controls.

Mossop scored a game-high five goals for the Colonials while Waskowicz scored two in the win. First Team All-NEC selection Colleen O'Donnell was kept off the scoreboard but had three caused turnovers and two draw controls before earning her second yellow card midway through the second frame. Monmouth will travel to Connecticut to face Sacred Heart on Friday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m.
