Simon Fraser Drops Tough Battle to No. 5 Chapman

CARLSBAD, CA (March 25, 2012) Leading 2-0 after the first quarter and 6-5 at the half, Simon Fraser would continue to show that they can compete with the MCLA's best but would once again fall just short of knocking off their first Top 10 opponent of 2012, as No. 5 Chapman broke open a 10-10 game in the fourth quarter to claim a 13-11 win.

Sophomore attackman Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) led the Clan with 5 points on 4 goals and 1 assist, while freshman midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) 3g, 1a and junior attack Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) 2g, 2a also had outstanding games offensively with 4 points each. The loss was Fraser's third to a Top 5 opponent this season, with a -13 goal differential in those three games, including an 11-4 loss to current No. 1 Colorado State and a 14-10 loss to No. 3 Brigham Young.

Both teams came flying out of the gate but an unexpected defensive battle to start the contest kept a low scoring first quarter close over the opening 15:00 minutes. Simon Fraser drew first blood as Dow converted a pass from Clare, then Clare scored off of a feed from Craig to put the Clan up 2-0 heading into the second frame.

Chapman would begin to catch fire in the second quarter as a 4-goal run, fueled by 2 goals on the man-up, put the Panthers up 4-2. The momentum would continue to shift back and forth as consecutive goals by Craig, the first on the man-up and the second off a feed from Dow, would be part of a 3-goal SFU run, capped off by a goal in transition from freshman midfielder Casey Foster (Edmonton, AB/St. Francis Xavier) to reclaim the Clan lead at 5-4.

Chapman attack Andrew Clayton (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge HS) knotted the two teams at 5-5 before Dow's second of the game, assisted by Iain Vickars (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) put Fraser up by a score of 6-5 at the break.

Special teams would continue to kick start the scoring in the second half, as Sam Cemo (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit Sacramento HS) scored on a Chapman man-up, with Craig responding on a Clan man-advantage to complete the hattrick and keep SFU ahead at 7-6.

Another 3-goal run would see the Panthers pull ahead by two at 9-7 until back-to-back goals by junior Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School), assisted by Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) on the man-up, followed by Clare at even strength re-tied the game at 9-9.

Chapman midfielder Ryan Hellmich (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro HS) would score his first of two second-half goals to close out the third quarter scoring and put the Panthers up by one heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter would continue the games hurried pace as Clare scored his third of the game to draw the two teams back to even at 10-10 and set the stage for a dynamic finish.

Having slowed the high powered Chapman offense down for most of the game, Simon Fraser would be unable to stall the Panthers down the stretch as a string of goals by AJ Rafter (Tustin, CA/Tustin HS), Hellmich and Madison Fiore (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran HS) put the hometown squad up by three midway through the fourth quarter.

Craig and Dow would connect one more time to give the Clan life down by two with just over 6:00 minutes left to play but neither team would get back on the scoreboard as more back-and-forth play resulted in a 13-11 finish.

Simon Fraser nor Chapman would have to wait long to get back in action as Chapman traveled to San Diego (W 13-5) the next day on Saturday, March 24 and the Clan wrapped up their trip to The Golden State with a game against No. 19 Loyola Marymount (W 10-9) on Sunday, March 25.
