Plymouth State Shoots Past Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 27, 2012) Plymouth State's Caitlin Swanson (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional) registered a game-high five goals as the Panthers defeated Fitchburg State, 16-5, at Elliot Field this afternoon.

Plymouth opened a five goal lead after one half of play, receiving three goals from Swanson in the first frame. The Panthers rifled off four straight scores to start the contest, using tallies from Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass./Hull), Shannon Connerty (Nashua, N.H./Tyngsboro), Swanson and Meghan McNabb (Lexington, Mass./Lexington), but Fitchburg finally broke its scoring silence with a goal from Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) at the 23:40 mark.

The Falcons cut their deficit to only two with goals from Kennedy and Cassandra Benoit (N. Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), but the Panthers closed the half with three consecutive scores to post a five goal advantage at the break.

In the second half, Plymouth State broke open the contest, outscoring Fitchburg State 7-1 in the stanza. McNabb connected for a pair of her game-high seven points with two scores in the frame, while Swanson and McKenna Bay (Maracaibo, Venezuela/Belle Vista) both added a pair of markers. Freshman Lindsay White (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) netted the lone goal for the Falcons.

Plymouth State controlled the game's tempo for the most part, using a 37-14 shot margin to its advantage. The Panthers picked up a 21-16 advantage in groundballs, while also tallying a 15-8 advantage in draw controls.

Sophomore Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) turned in a complete game effort for the Falcons, stopping 11 shots over her 60 minutes of work, while sophomore Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) earned the win for the Panthers with a five save, complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-3, 1-0 NEWLA) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 4:30 p.m. Plymouth State (4-1, 0-0 LEC) will visit Castleton State on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
