St. Lawrence Opens Early Lead, Holds off Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - St. Lawrence (6-0) opened up an early lead and held off Potsdam (3-2) for a 10-6 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon. Junior attackman Dave Hovey (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster) led the Saints with two goals and two assists, while sophomore attack Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had a game-high three goals and two assists for the Bears.

Defense was the story in the first quarter both offenses were held in check early. Hovey opened the scoring at the 11:07 mark and struck again at 8:04. Junior midfielder Dave Schoettler (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) struck with 52 seconds left in the opening period for a 3-0 St. Lawrence advantage. Junior attackman Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) answered 30 seconds later to get the Bears on the board.

Kunz notched his first to close the gap to 3-2 just a minute into the second quarter. Saint junior attackman Justin Ingram (Cornwall, Ontario/Brewster Academy) made it a two-goal game again off the ensuing faceoff. Kunz then buried his second at 10:02, but St. Lawrence seniors Kyle Jacobsen (Montville, N.J./Delbarton School) and Drake Paul (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) each scored to give the Saints a 6-3 lead at the break.

Kunz set up senior attackman Pete Pike (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) just 1:25 into the third quarter and Potsdam trailed just 6-4. Sophomore midfielder Connor Behun (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) gave the Saints a three-goal lead with 8:12 remaining in the period.

It looked as if the score would remain the same heading into the final quarter, but a two-goal outburst in a five second span from St. Lawrence made it a 9-4 contest with 15 minutes left. Junior midfielder Cam Scullen (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) scored at 00:18 and Jacobsen at 00:13.

Sophomore midfielder Pierson Fowler (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Hotchkiss School) closed the scoring for St. Lawrence at 12:36 of the fourth quarter and the Saints led 10-4. Kunz set up Pike again at the 8:28 mark and then scored himself for the third time a minute later to get the Bears to within 10-6. Potsdam moved the ball well in the offensive end for the rest of the game, but couldn't get any closer.

In goal, senior Mike Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) finished with 16 saves for the Bears. Saints junior goalies Jeff Goeke (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and Jack Nuland (Ridgefield, Conn./Taft School) each played a half. Goeke made two saves and allowed 3 goals to earn the win, while Nuland allowed three goals and stopped six shots in the final 30 minutes.

St. Lawrence outshot Potsdam 34-28 and collected 35 groundballs to the Bears' 29.

Potsdam is back in action on Saturday, March 31, when it hosts Utica for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference battle.
