Behind Cole and Tavella, Nor'easters Storm past NEC

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) combined to score 12 goals and record six assists to lead University of New England to a 21-11 win over New England College in a non-conference match played Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 27) at the Big Blue Turf.

Winners of five consecutive outings, the Nor'easters improve to 7-2. NEC saw its two-game win streak come to an end to slip to 2-4.

Tavella finished with a match-high seven goals, including four in the first half, as the Nor'easters built a 9-3 advantage. Cole added five markers and handed out a game-high four assists while also coming up with five draw controls.

First-year Rachel Schwanner (Holderness, N.H.) chipped in a career-high three goals and four ground balls for UNE, and classmate Nikki Smith (Shapleigh, Maine) scored twice. Senior Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) scooped up six ground balls and caused three turnovers to aid in the win.

Senior Amanda Naimie (York, Maine) and sophomore Emily Bamberger (Brimfield, Mass.) tallied four goals apiece for NEC. Naimie added five ground balls, while senior Chantale Lacroix (Manchester, N.H.) controlled a match-high 10 draws.

Leading 3-2 just over 10 minutes into the contest, Big Blue scored four consecutive times over a five-minute span to assume control of the tilt. Tavella scored twice during the spurt.

The Nor'easters notched seven of the first eight goals of the final frame to build a 16-4 cushion before coasting the rest of the way. Cole and Tavella accounted for five of those seven goals.

Sophomore Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) played the opening 42:25 to record the win. She came up with four stops. Sophomore Rachel Lee (York, Maine) came on to make a pair of saves the rest of the way.

Junior Rebecca Harvey (Natick, Mass.) had 11 saves for the Pilgrims.

UNE will look to extend its winning streak Saturday (March 31) in a 1:00 p.m. road match with Roger Williams University. New England College plays at Wellesley College on Thursday (March 29).
