Gorajek Leads No. 11 Bowdoin by No. 19 Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Carolyn Gorajek scored five goals with three assists as Bowdoin College prevailed over Bates on Wednesday evening, 12-10. The 11th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 4-2 (3-1 NESCAC), while the 19th-ranked Bobcats fall to 3-4 (1-4 NESCAC).

In addition to Gorajek's eight points, Bowdoin got two goals from Elizabeth Clegg and a goal and two assists from Betsy Sachs. Tara Connolly made 11 saves for the Polar Bears. Bates got four goals and two assists from Joan O'Neill while Soohee Yoon and Jenna Dannis had two goals apiece. Eloise O'Connor made three saves in the loss.

A see-saw first half saw the teams deadlocked at 5-5 at halftime. Neither team could take more than a one-goal advantage either way until late in the second period, when Bowdoin used a 4-1 run to go from an 8-7 deficit to a 11-9 lead with 10:35 to play.

Clegg gave Bowdoin the lead for good with a free-position shot at 11:58 and Olivia King took a feed from Gorajek and deposited a goal to give Bowdoin the two-goal lead.

After Joan O'Neill trimmed the lead to 11-10 with 10 minutes to go, Bowdoin sustained a long possession, milking the clock under the two-minute mark. Bates forced a Bowdoin turnover and raced downfield in search of the potential game-tying score. But Connolly stoned Bates' Carolyn Pierce from point-blank range with 1:39 remaining to preserve the one-goal advantage. McKenna Teague notched an insurance goal to seal the win for Bowdoin.

Bates held a 24-17 edge in shots and won 15 of 24 draw controls, including six from Wally Pierce and five from Jenna Dannis. Molly Paduda led Bowdoin with three ground balls and three draw controls. The Polar Bears converted on four of five free position attempts for the contest.
