Second Half Surge Sends Roger Williams Past Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. (Mar. 28) Roger Williams used a second-half surge to defeat Nichols, 10-3, Wednesday evening in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Vendetti Field. With the win, the Hawks snap a four-game skid and improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in CCC games. Nichols dips to 2-4 and 0-2 in league play.

Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) and Drew Beck (South Salem, N.Y.) paced the Hawks with five points each. Nessa loaded up with three goals and a pair of assists, while Beck was the primary playmaker with four assists and a goal. Leading the Hawks' efficient man-up attack was Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.), who scored three goals on the day, two coming during the Hawks' nine extra-man opportunities.

A trio of Bison scored for Nichols, including Brian Girard (Norwood, Mass.), who potted his sixth of the season. Steve Delahanty (Auburn, N.H.) and Zac Smith (Wilbraham, Mass.) also found the back of the net. Bison netminder Scott Gray (Annapolis, Md.) was stellar, recording 16 saves, including several highlight-reel stops among five in the first quarter alone.

Nessa scored a man-up goal on the Hawks' first opportunity in the opening quarter, using a feed from Beck to get on the board at 7:17. Beck sent a centering pass to Todd Carson (Pennington, N.J.) for a net-front strike less than two minutes later. Nessa pushed the lead to three at the start of the second quarter with an unassisted tally before the Bison's Girard got Nichols on the board with 7:48 left in the half. Under heavy coverage, Girard came from around the back of the net and scooped the ball in as he was pushed to the ground.

Carson added to the Hawks' advantage in the third quarter with a perimeter shot while on the man-up, coming from Nessa to make it 4-1. It wasn't until late in the frame that Nichols answered back on a Macaulay Gillis (Northborough, Mass.) feed to Smith for his fourth score of the year with three minutes left in the quarter.

Cameron Signorelli (Albany, N.Y.) went to work for Roger Williams, recording back-to-back goals, capping the quarter's scoring by capitalizing on a Bison turnover, nabbing the groundball and bringing it in unopposed for a quick score.

Carrying a 7-2 lead into the final frame, Signorelli scored the first of four-straight Hawks goals within the opening 33 seconds. The Bison's Delahanty capped the game's scoring with a quick spin shot from outside after a pass from Michael Bane (North Grafton, Mass.).

Gray finished the game with 16 saves, while Roger Williams goalkeeper Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) made 11 in the win.

Roger Williams led the groundball battle by a 37-25 margin and won 13 of 17 draws on the stick of Alan Williams (Bristol, R.I.).

Nichols hosts Wentworth Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a CCC match-up. Roger Williams hosts University of New England Saturday in a league game at 3:30 p.m.
