Maritime Holds on for One-Goal Win vs. Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 28, 2012) Maritime held on to its lead late in the game to defeat the visiting Mount St. Vincent Dolphins in both teams' Skyline Conference opener Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers to 2-8 on the season (1-0 Skyline), while CMSV falls to 7-5 (0-1 Skyline).

Senior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led Maritime scoring the first three goals (all in the first half) and assisting on the fourth. The two teams were tied 3-3 at the half, as the Dolphins got goals by Bruce Pappas, Matt Desimone and Dan Cohen. The Privateers led in the shots department after two quarters, 21-11, with Mount St. Vincent's goalie, Kyle Kalibat busy making eight saves.

In the second half, sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity off an assist by Messina to give Maritime a 4-3 lead. Pappas scored his second to tie the game later in the third quarter, before junior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) darted to the net from the top of the zone and fired a shot past Kalibat. Winter scored his second of the game and what would wind up being the winner at 6:28 of the fourth when Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) passed the ball to him from behind the net and he fired a shot in to give Maritime a 6-4 lead.

The Dolphins threatened late and scored one goal when Matt Desimone scored unassisted. The pressure was intensified and it seemed like the ball stayed in the Maritime end. Mount St. Vincent came very close to tying it on a shot by Ahmed Ajao that hit the post with 34 seconds to go and the two teams traded possessions late, but the Privateers held on for the victory.

In goal for the Privateers, junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) earned the victory after making nine saves, while his counterpart for CMSV, Kalibat, finished with 13 saves in the losing effort.

Maritime is back at it on Saturyda, March 31, when they team travels down to take on Kean University in a doubleheader with the women's team. The men are scheduled to faceoff at 4:00 p.m. at the Cougars' Alumni Field.
