Otterbein Shuts Down Albion to Win Third Straight

WESTERVILLE, OHIO Otterbein University men's lacrosse tallied its third-straight victory Wednesday afternoon, topping visiting Albion College 7-4 at Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals move to 3-2 this spring, and will return to action next Wednesday, April 4 at Kenyon College. Starting time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

The first half featured a rather slow pace, with sophomore Mikey O'Neal putting Otterbein ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal at the 8:10 mark of the first quarter.

Junior Andrew Donatelli put the Cards up 2-0 just before the end of the opening period, and goals from Pat Teynor and Mike Dattolo in the second frame gave Otterbein a 4-0 halftime lead.

An Albion goal cut the Cardinal lead to 5-3 with 6:00 remaining in the final quarter, but Otterbein's Drew Watson responded with a score ten seconds later to kill the Britons momentum.

Eric Garris followed with another Otterbein goal with 3:42 to play and the Cards would never look back.

O'Neal and Donatelli combined for three goals and five assists on the day, with O'Neal also picking up five ground balls.

Junior tri-captain Steve Resch grabbed a team-high six ground balls while Jake Ritzenthaler won 10 of the game's 15 faceoff opportunities.

Albion goalie Kyle Formanczyk performed admirably between the posts, recording 15 saves and causing four turnovers. Adam Hatchard held steady in the cage for Otterbein, stopping nine shots to go along with four ground balls.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio Albion had trouble getting the ball to its attackers, and despite 15 saves by Kyle Formanczyk (Chesterfield/L'Anse Creuse North), the Britons suffered a 7-4 setback at Otterbein.

The Britons were successful on 19 of 36 clearing opportunities and they won 5 of the 15 face-offs. Albion also did not take advantage of its extra man opportunities, going 0 for 5.

Otterbein finished the first quarter with a 10-2 edge in shots and unassisted goals by Mikey O'Neal and Andrew Donatelli staked the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead. Donatelli and O'Neal assisted on second quarter goals by Pat Teynor and Mike Dattolo. Otterbein extended the lead to 5-0 as O'Neal scored nearly four minutes into the third quarter.

Albion rallied to score the next three goals as Matt Lask (Chesterfield/L'Anse Creuse North), Stephen Treppa (Clinton Township/L'Anse Creuse), and Dan Genord (Ann Arbor/Gabriel Richard). O'Neal stopped the Albion rally as he assisted goals by Drew Watson and Eric Garris. Tim Urso (Novi/Detroit Catholic Central) completed the scoring with 1:03 left.

Albion returns to Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium for weekend matches against the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Hanover College.
