Spartans Fall Behind Early, Can't Catch Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. - Castleton couldn't come back from a first-half deficit and fell to visiting Plymouth St. 17-9 on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans found themselves down 12-5 after the first 30 minutes but weren't able to cut into the lead in the second as they dropped to 2-5 on the season. The Panthers, meanwhile, improved to 5-1 with the decisive victory.

Plymouth St. scored twice in the opening two minutes to grab the 2-0 advantage, though Castleton cut the lead in half at the 23:27 mark on free position goal by Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt.). One goal from each team over the next minute, including a score from Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) kept the home squad within one, 3-2.

The Panthers used six unanswered goals over the next ten minutes to stretch their lead to 9-2. The Spartans added a pair of goals over the final 10:11, but Plymouth St. scored three more to take a 12-5 lead into the break.

In the second half, three more goals from the Panthers extended the lead to 15-5, before Bonasera ended the run off a pass from Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) at the 19:04 mark. Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) made it 15-6 and the two teams each scored twice over the final 15 minutes for the 17-9 final score.

Shannon Conerty (Nashua, N.H.) added three goals and two assists in the win. Goalie Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) made 13 saves while allowing just nine goals for her fifth win of the season.

Mazzola had a hat trick to lead the Castleton offense and Bonasera added three goals, six ground ball, four draw controls and three caused turnovers in a solid all-around effort. Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) got the start in net and played 40:56, making three saves before being pulled in favor of freshman Kelsey MacDonald (Burnt Hill, N.Y.). MacDonald allowed two goals while making five saves in 19:04 of action.
