Hartwick Hangs on for One-Goal Win over Cazenovia

ONEONTA, NY Senior Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon HS), sophomore Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick HS), and freshman Jackie Moynihan (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS) combined for eight goals, and Hartwick hung on for an 11-10 victory over Cazenovia on Thursday at Wright Stadium. The victory ups the Hawks' overall record to 4-3. The Wildcats slip to 2-4.

The Hawks opened up their biggest lead of the game with less than 18 minutes to play on a Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown HS) free-position goal that made the score 10-6. The Cats stormed back, however, with three straight goals over a 3:25 span to pull within one with 11 minutes to go.

Moynihan extended the Hawks' edge to two with 5:04 to play before Caz made it a one-goal game once again with under four minutes remaining. 'Wick won the ensuing draw and maintained possession for virtually the remainder of the game, not allowing Caz to cross midfield to secure the win.

Kennedy and Sisco led all scorers with three goals apiece. Moynihan added two goals for the Hawks. Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles HS) contributed a goal and an assist with Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place HS) and Littleton also tallying.

Alicia Priest, Lana Lewis, and Christy Foster led the Cats with two goals each. Four other players had one goal.

The game featured four tie scores and two lead changes. The Hawks finished the game with a 32-23 edge in shots and a 23-16 advantage in ground balls.

Hartwick also held a large advantage on the draw with a 17-6 edge. The Hawks also overcame a season-high 26 turnovers in the win.

The Hawks dominated the early proceedings as they held a 5-0 edge in shots over the first six minutes but were not rewarded until LaVaute broke the ice at 24:05. Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland HS) dished out the assist.

Caz roared back with two quick goals from Anna Dientsman and Priest in a 1:15 span to take a 2-1 lead, but McGovern and Kennedy answered with tallies 27 ticks apart to regain the lead for the Hawks. Carly Newman (Seaford, NY/Seaford HS) earned an assist on McGovern's goal.

The game remained 3-2 until under nine minutes remained in the half when Lewis tied it up on a free-position goal at 8:58. Hartwick closed out the half with Sisco and Kennedy scoring unassisted goals in the final 4:07 for a 5-3 lead at intermission.

Hartwick finished the half with a 17-9 edge in shots. The Hawks, however, only put nine of their 17 shots on target with Caz keeper Christina Marra making four stops.

Lewis and Sisco traded goals for their respective teams in the first 2:48 of the second half before Caz goals by Danielle Clark and Anna Cariello evened the score at 6-6 with 22 minutes remaining.

The Hawks took control of the game with four straight tallies over the next 3:08 to take a 10-6 lead. Sisco scored at the 20:55 mark and Kennedy found the net off a LaVaute feed 52 seconds later. Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran HS) then found Moynihan for a goal with 18:22 left and Littleton scored 35 seconds later for Hartwick's 10th goal of the game.

The Wildcats then started to chip away at the deficit over the next seven minutes to get within one. Daejah Werntz scored first at 14:21 and Foster scored back-to-back goals to make the score 10-9 with 10:56 showing on the clock.

The Hawks won the next draw and fired two shots on the Caz goal with Marra making the stop on one to keep the game a one-goal affair. Priest had an opportunity to tie it with just over six minutes left but her free-position effort was thwarted by Hartwick keeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) on one of her six saves on the day.
