Yeowomen Outlast Cardinals to Win 7th in a Row
Naperville, IL – Oberlin College remained perfect by outlasting the Cardinals of North Central College, 11-10, on Thursday evening. With the win, the Yeowomen improved to 7-0 on the season.
Junior standout Ilyssa Meyer led the way offensively with five goals, including what proved to be the game-winner. Freshman Kate Hanick was the only other Yeowoman to score more than one time as she netted three on the night to go along with a team-high four draw controls.
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout as no more than three goals separated the two teams. An Alice Zicht 8-meter score at with 2:38 left in the first half gave the Yeowomen a 6-3 cushion, but the Cardinals would cash in the final two scores of the period and add two more to start the second to grab a 7-6 advantage.
Three straight Oberlin goals made it a 9-7 game in and from there the Yeowomen would never trail again. Meyer's final goal of the game at the 12:56 mark extended the gap out to 11-8, but the Cardinals wouldn't go quietly as they scored twice more to get within one with 5:20 to play.
In the final minutes of action, the Cardinals had a chance to tie the game but Yeowomen goalie Madeleine O'Meara turned away Caroline Gully's shot and then record another save on Molly Bahr's free-position attempt with just 3:15 to go to help preserve the win.
O'Meara finished with 12 saves, while Bronwen Schumacher and Sarah Andrews chipped in with five ground balls.
Oberlin won the ground ball battle 34-27 and won 15 of the game's 23 draw controls.
The Yeowomen return to action on Saturday afternoon at Concordia-Wisconsin.
