Herons Soar Past Vassar in Liberty Opener

GENEVA, N.Y.-Junior Kathleen Ragan scored three goals and tallied three assists to lead William Smith to a 17-5 victory over Vassar in the Herons' Liberty League opener on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation this afternoon.

The Herons improve to 2-3 this season, and the Brewers fall to 2-3. Fourteen Herons recorded at least one point in the win. Senior Kathryn Gillan notched four points on three goals and an assist. Senior Callie Frelinghuysen scored a goal and added two assists. Junior Katie Dexter, first-year Katie Sipple, senior Christine Abramo, and sophomore Hannah Schickel each chipped in two points. Junior Liz Seidel won a game-high four draw controls.

Sophomore Maggie McNair played the opening 55:17 in goal for William Smith and made three saves. McNair also shared a game-high with four ground balls. Sophomore Rachel Fippinger came in to play the final 4:43 and stopped one shot.

Sophia Rosetti led Vassar with three goals. Elizabeth Annis and Marissa Reilly each scored once for the Brewers. Katharine Pulla played the opening 38:42 in goal and made seven saves. She also shared a game-high with four ground balls. Heather Kesselman came in to play 17:51 in net and made one save. Hilary McDonnell closed out the game in net for Vassar and stopped one shot.

The Brewers struck first. Just 23 seconds into the game, Reilly capitalized on a free position to make it 1-0. This was the only lead that Vassar would have in the game.

The Herons rattled off the next nine goals. At 2:05 Seidel scored her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Rosie Scheibel. Schickel took advantage of a free position to give William Smith the lead, and the Herons did not let go from there. Senior Lucy Johnson scored her sixth of the year after a feed from Hughes, and Sipple found the back of the net to make it 4-1 after a pass from Dexter.

First-year Abbie West notched her first collegiate goal, and back-to-back tallies by Ragan put William Smith up 7-1.Gillan scored her first goal of the day after a pass from Frelinghuysen at 17:10, and Abramo capped the run, scoring after another Frelinghuysen assist. With 5:01 left in the first half, Rosetti scored for Vassar to make the score 9-2 going into the break.

The Herons offense continued to dominate in the second half, as William Smith opened with a 7-0 run. Gillan started things off with a free position goal and then set-up Ragan's third tally of the day to make it 11-2. Ragan then set up goals by Frelinghuysen and Sipple to put the Herons up by 11. At 15:06 in the second, Dexter found the back of the net after a pass from Abramo, and just under four minutes later, Gillan capitalized on another free position to make the score 15-2. First-year Megan Robson registered her first collegiate tally to finish off the run.

Rosetti drilled a shot past the Heron keeper to make it 16-3 with 8:19 remaining. Schickel scored her first goal of the season to give William Smith a 17-3 advantage. First-year Haley Braun earned the assist. The Brewers got goals from Elizabeth Annis and Rosetti in the final 4:28.

William Smith enjoyed a 32-9 advantage in shots and a 20-15 lead in ground balls. The Herons won 14 draw controls, while Vassar grabbed 10. The Brewers were 11 for 16 on clear attempts, while William Smith was 19 for 23.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, March 31 when they host Bard for another Liberty League contest at 2:00 p.m.
