Clarkson Knocks off 15th-Ranked Rensselaer

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Behind a strong first-half effort, and solid offensive and defensive play, Clarkson won its second straight game with a dominating 10-4 victory over 15th-ranked Rensselaer in Liberty League action at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) was in top form in the Clarkson goal with a nine-save effort, including four stops in the first half as the Golden Knights held the Engineers off the scoreboard through the opening 30 minutes.

Junior midfielder Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) led a balanced scoring outing by the Green and Gold with a game-high three points on two goals and one assist. Senior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) also scored two goals apiece.

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and added two more goals in the second to take a 5-0 lead at the break. Senior Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) put Clarkson on top 6-0 early in the third quarter before Rensselaer (7-2, 1-1 Liberty League) got on the scoreboard. The Engineers scored four of the next five goals to make it a 7-4 game early in the final quarter. Clarkson, however, tallied the game's last three goals to gain its fifth victory in the last six meetings against Rensselaer.

Juniors Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) and freshman Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) also scored in the victory.

The Knights outshot the Engineers 39-25 and controlled ground balls 31-19, while dominating faceoffs. Sophomore Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) won 13 of 18 draws to start the Clarkson offense. Keenan, Cole, senior Corey Flanigan (Rochester, NY) and sophomore defenseman Rick Clement (Cotuit, MA) each picked up four ground balls in a balanced effort by the Knights.

RPI got goals from Brett Overend, Andrew Liptak, Wes Rudy and Mike Sarson.

Clarkson, which stands at 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League, breaks from conference play this week with a non-league match-up against cross-town rival Potsdam State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on Hantz Turf Field.

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Golden Knights tallied five goals in the first half and held the Engineers to just four goals in the second half as Clarkson defeated Rensselaer, 10-4 in Liberty League men's lacrosse action. With the victory, the homestanding Knights improve to 6-2 (1-1 LL), while the #15 Engineers fall to 7-2 overall (1-1 LL). Seven different players notched goals for Clarkson, led by two each from Brendon Shearin, Corey Herrington and Eric Gollands.

The home team got things going in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 3-0 lead over a five-minute span at the mid-way point. Matthew Gold got the scoring started at 11:10 and was quickly followed by Gollands less than two minutes later as he connected off a feed from Shearin. It would be Shearing with 6:18 to play that would give the Knights the lead. The second quarter saw Clarkson continue to pressure as Herrington scored past RPI keeper Alex Castronovo at 13:42 off a feed from Matt McCabe.

Gollands pushed the lead to five (5-0) with 2:06 left till halftime with his 13th of the season past Castronovo.

In the second half, Clarkson added a quick tally at 13:31 as Matt Cyr found the back of the net, but the visiting Engineers began to mount a comeback. Trailing by six (6-0), junior Brett Overend got RPI on the board with 10:50 as he connected on a pass from classmate David Hey. Late in the third quarter, junior Wes Rudy made it a 6-2 contest with 2:35 to play as he tallied his 10th of the season past Knights goalie Ryan Cole.
