#2 Syracuse Defeats Harvard in First WLax Game at Gillette

The Orange opened the scoring in the first half as Sarah Holden scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the game. Harvard responded at the 20:59 mark as Jenn Leffew evened the score at 1-1, tallying her fifth goal in 2012. Murray put Syracuse back on top, 2-1, with 13:14 left in the first half and sparked a run of four-straight goals for the Orange.

Katie Webster netted two of those markers, with the first coming at the 12:11 mark and the second at 3:06. Kempney and B. Block both found the back of the net for Syracuse, increasing its lead to five, 6-1. With 18 seconds remaining in the frame, Harvard cut the deficit to four, 6-2, as Chelsey Newman scored her second of the year.

At the opening of the second half Baskind notched Harvard's third goal of the game to chip away at Syracuse's lead, 6-3. The Orange responded less than a minute later on a free position shot by Murray, going back up by five, 7-2. Back-to-back goals for the Crimson, both scored by Baskind to complete her hat trick, made it a two score game, 7-5.

The Orange answered right back to increase its lead to 9-5, tallying one a piece for Webster and Murray. The Crimson did not back down, however, cutting the lead back to three, 9-6, with 9:15 minutes remaining in the contest on a marker from Danielle Tetreault, her 13th on the season, assisted by Baskind. Syracuse's Murray scored the final goal of the contest to secure the victory, 10-6.

The Crimson continues on the road returning to action Tuesday, April 2 when it faces No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. First draw is schedule for 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Saturday's contest between the Crimson and Orange marked the first-ever women's collegiate sporting event at Gillette Stadium ... Melanie Baskind registered her third hat trick of 2012, the 11th of her career, and notched a season-high five points.
