Miller and Flood Lead Colgate to Victory over Yale

HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/31/12) Colgate got five goals from Courtney Miller and Alison Flood, while Katie Sullivan tallied a game-high seven points as the Raiders defeated Yale, 16-12, on Saturday afternoon at Tyler's Field.

Colgate (3-8) saw Miller post six points as she added an assist to her goal total. Flood's five goals were a career-high and she has 18 goals on the season. Quincey Spagnoletti and Monica White also scored for the Raiders. Jennie Berglin earned her third win this season and made 10 stops.

Yale (3-6) got two goals from five different players and leading the way was Caroline Crow, who finished with four points on two goals and two assists. Erin McMullan got the start in net and matched Berglin with 10 saves.

Colgate was able to jump out to a 4-2 lead in the first 17 minutes of the game with Miller, Sullivan, Flood and Spagnoletti each scoring. Yale tried to comeback with goals by Crow and Devon Rhodes, but each time the Bulldogs put one in the net, the Raiders would answer with two of their own. Crow's goal made it 4-3 with 8:40 left in the first half.

Miller and Flood then scored back-to-back goals to give Colgate its largest lead up to that point at 6-3. Yale got one back with Rhodes scoring with 2:31 remaining in the half, but then Flood scored two-straight to increase the lead to 8-4 with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Crow closed out the half with her second goal of the day and the score was 8-5 at the half.

The Bulldogs got on the board just 12 seconds into the second half as Reilly Foote won the draw control and sprinted to an open shot in front of Berglin and she beat the rookie goalie to cut the lead to two at 8-6. The Raiders answered with three-straight goals to push the lead to its highest point at five with an 11-6 lead. White got it started with her lone goal of the day and then Flood and Miller continued their offensive production with a goal apiece.

Colgate got stuck at 11 goals for the next eight minutes and Yale sliced into the advantage with three goals to make it 11-9 with 19:13 remaining in the game. That was the closest the Bulldogs got as the team's traded goals and the Raiders led 13-11 with 8:38 left.

Colgate took over the game in the final 7:27 as the Raiders outscored Yale 3-1 down the stretch. Sullivan single-handily propelled the Raiders to the win with a natural hat trick to get the lead back up to five goals at 16-11. The Bulldogs got one back with 33 seconds left, but it was too late and Colgate earned a 16-12 win.

The Raiders outshot the Bulldogs 39-24 and forced Yale into 18 turnovers and picked up 20 ground balls to 15 for the visitors.

Next up for Colgate is a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship game as Navy makes the trip to Hamilton for a 12:00 p.m. start on Saturday.

Notes: The 16 goals were the second most scored by Colgate this season ... Jenna Frost continues to be a force on ground balls as she picked up five GBs and now has 35 on the season ...
