Boyer, Scoba Guide Purple Knights Past SCSU
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Eliza Scoba (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and freshman Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) combined to score seven goals to help Saint Michael's snap a three-game skid by defeating Southern Connecticut, 13-5, on Saturday at Dow Field. The Purple Knights improve to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Owls fall to 1-8 and 0-6.
Scoba finished with four goals and one assist, while Boyer finished with three goals to mark her single-game season high. Freshman Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) added two goals for the visitors, while sophomore Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy) contributed one tally and two helpers. Classmate Nicole Buckley (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) scooped up nine ground balls and caused seven turnovers, while senior Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 17 saves. The Purple Knights limited the Owls to one goal on eight free-position shots.
Five players scored for Southern Connecticut State, including junior Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass./Beverly), who added eight ground balls, five draw controls and five caused turnovers. Junior Lynette Martinez (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) made seven saves.
The Purple Knights ran to a 6-0 lead by the 23:31 mark, with Scoba tallying three of the goals, and Saint Michael's tacked on two more, with Piper and freshman Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) contributing, to make it an eight-goal game at 18:01. The Owls got on the board 54 seconds later, but Scoba sparked another Saint Michael's run, and the Purple Knights tallied three straight goals to take an 11-1 edge heading into the second half.
The Owls began the second half by scoring four of the first five goals and cut the Purple Knights' lead to seven at 13:09, but Boyer completed her hat trick at 4:39 to give the Purple and Gold an eight-goal cushion it would not relinquish.
