Vassar Dealt Setback vs. Union in Liberty League Action

SCHENECTADY, NY (March 31, 2012) Powered by four first half goals and seven in the game from freshman attack Emily McGrail, Union built a 6-2 halftime lead and defeated the Brewers 13-5 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. McGrail now has 20 goals in her rookie season, had nine shots and five ground balls and was five for five in free position attempts

The Dutchwomen and Brewers were knotted 2-2 after sophomore attack Cameron Felt scored her first goal of the season at the 18:46 mark, but Union scored four straight goals, all coming from McGrail in an eight minute span to take a 6-2 halftime lead. Union's junior midfielder Brittany Fraser scored the first goal of the second half on a free position shot to push the home team ahead 7-2 just 45 seconds into play.

The Brewers, 2-4, 0-2 Liberty League, will look to bounce back in their home opener on Wednesday, April 4 at SUNY New Paltz at 6:00 pm on Weinberg Field. Union improves to 2-4, 2-0 Liberty League and next travels to William Smith on April 7 for a 3:00 p.m. game.

Behind goals from freshman attack Dara Davis and freshman midfielder Sophia Rosetti, the Brewers got within 7-4 with 27 minutes remaining, but McGrail answered with her fifth goal for a 8-4 Union lead. Down 11-4 with 21 minutes to play, Vasar got a goal from junior midfielder Marissa Reilly off a Davis assist to cut the margin to 11-5 with 19 minutes remaining. Rosetti had two goals for Vassar.

Freshman goalie Katharine Pula made nine saves against 25 Union shots. Dutchwomen goalie Kim Grinhaus made four saves.

Sophomore defender Phoebe Tzannes had three ground balls for the Brewers.
