No. 19 Georgetown Uses Strong 3rd Quarter to Top Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. - A crucial four-goal run in the third quarter by the No. 20/19 Georgetown mens lacrosse team (5-3, 1-0 Big East) proved enough to create adequate breathing room against Lafayette (2-7, 0-3 Patriot League), as the Hoyas fought their way to an 8-5 victory over the Leopards on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium.

The Hoyas victory was aided in large part by the play of the teams extra-man and man-down units. The Blue & Gray went 4 for 6 on extra-man opportunities, while holding Lafayette to 1 for 5, while scoring their first man-down goal of the season.

Junior attack Zac Guy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) scored two goals and had one assist, while junior attack Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored one goal and had two assists to lead the offense. Senior middie Zack Angel (Park Hall, Md./St. Marys Ryken) scored two goals and now has 15 on the season.

Senior goalie Matt Winter (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) earned his fourth victory of the season, making eight saves for the Hoyas.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Hoyas offense came alive early in the second, rattling off three goals in just over a minute. Casey intercepted a pass and found Guy, setting up a one-on-one with the goalie, as Guy scored the man-down goal to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

Casey scored forty-seconds later, wrapping around the crease and finding the top left corner of the net to give GU a 2-0 lead. Zack Angel extended the Hoyas lead to three goals with a blast from near the top of the box to convert the extra man situation.

The Leopards clawed back, as Brian Bock scored two goals during a 3-0 run, tying the score with just over four minutes left in the first half.

The Hoyas opened the third quarter with a man advantage and did not waste the opportunity, as Casey found Jason McFadden, who scored his first goal of the game. A 30-second push penalty on Lafayette created another extra man opportunity for the Hoyas, as Angel scored with 14:01 remaining in the third to put GU in front 5-3.

Dan McKinney ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter and Travis Comeau finished on the feed from Guy for the Hoyas fourth straight goal taking a 7-3 lead. Bock ended the Hoyas run with his third goal of the game, with GU taking a 7-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bock scored his fourth goal of the game with over nine and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to cut GUs lead to two goals at 7-5.

Guy scored his second goal of the game with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter to convert another man-up opportunity for the Hoyas the final goal in Georgetowns 8-5 victory over Lafayette.

Georgetown returns to action on Wednesday, May 4 when the travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on the No. 13 Wildcats with the face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Hoyas return home on Saturday, April 7 when they host St. Johns at 1:00 p.m.
