Privateers Come Up Just Short on the Road at Kean

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 1, 2012) Maritime battled Kean University hard on the road Saturday afternoon but came up just short of the Cougars, 7-5. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 2-9 (1-1 Skyline) on the season, while Kean improves to 8-3 (2-0 Skyline).

The first quarter saw the Cougars open the scoring under five minutes in with Nick Angrisani finding the back of the net from Ryan Buerkle. Maritime tied the game two minutes later when sophomore Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) answered with an unassisted goal, but Angrisani scored again before the end of the quarter to give Kean a 2-1 lead.

In the second period of action, junior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tied the game at 2-apiece when he beat the Kean goalie, Lane Zierten, off an assist by senior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). Kean scored twice more before the half ended and took a 4-2 lead into the lockers.

There was only one goal in the third and that was when Messina found the twine in a man-down situation, again assisted by Driscoll, to make the score 4-3 in favor of the home team. However, in the fourth quarter, the Cougars gained control of the game by scoring three-straight goals, two of which were by Angrisani, to go up 7-3. Maritime scored late, as Driscoll got a man-up tally with 46 seconds left from sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip).

Junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was strong in net, making 11 saves over the four periods, while also picking up three groundballs. Senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) matched the game-high with seven groundballs.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, April 4, for their final non-conference game of the season. They will play host to former Skyline-foe Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
