No. 24 Simon Fraser Knocks off No. 19 Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 25, 2012) Simon Fraser bounced back from a narrow 13-11 loss to No. 5 Chapman with a 10-9 victory over No. 19 Loyola Marymount on Sunday, March 25 to post their second Top 25 win of the season and go 1-1 on their out of conference trip through southern California.

Freshman standout Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) scored his second straight hat trick to lead the Clan with three goals, including the game winner, while junior midfielder Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey HS) also contributed 3 points in the win with 2 goals and 1 assist.

Clare opened the scoring, unassisted, before a great effort by sophomore midfielder Brendan Farrell (Milton, ON/St. Michael's College School) found junior attack Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) in front of the LMU net to put the Clan up 2-0 after 15:00 minutes.

Simon Fraser would continue their run into the second quarter as Ransom scored his first of the game off a feed from freshman Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) on a Clan man-up to extend the SFU lead to three.

Loyola Marymount would finally get on the board with back-to-back goals from sophomore Colby Rhodes (La Jolla, CA/Bishops HS) and fellow attack, senior Chase Parlett (Rancho Bernardo, CA/Rancho Bernardo HS) to bring the Lions back to within one at 3-2. Sophomore attack Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) would then round out the first half scoring to put the Clan ahead by two at 4-2 heading into the intermission.

Loyola Marymount would strike first out of the break as Rhodes scored his second of a game-high 5 goals to close the gap back to one at 4-3. Ransom's second would put the Clan back up by two at 5-3 before Rhodes continued to put the Lions on his back with three consecutive goals to tie the game at 5-5 and then give LMU their first lead of the game at 6-5. Clare would score his second to close out the third quarter and knot the two teams back to even at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

With rain beginning to fall heavily the two teams would prepare to battle it out over the final period. LMU continued to seize the momentum as another goal by Colby Rhodes sparked a two-goal run to put the Lions up by two at 8-6.

An opportune time-out would begin to shift the tides back in the Clan's favor as match-up adjustments began to stall the surging Lions offence while the Clan began to chip away with goals by Ransom, freshman Travis Hayes (Dublin, CA/Dublin HS) and Craig to reclaim the lead at 9-8.

LMU was not prepared to roll over as they quickly answered back with a marker of their own to re-tie the game at 9-9 with around 3:00 minutes remaining. Sensing another Top 25 upset within their grasps, Clare would convert a Calvin Craig pass with just over 2:00 minutes left to seal the deal and send the Clan home with a hard fought 10-9 victory.

In the latest Nike/Inside Lacrosse (ESPN Affiliate) Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, March 27, Fraser was able to move back into the Top 25 at No. 24 with the win, while despite the loss, the Lions were able to hold strong at No. 19.
