Castleton Takes One-Goal Win at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Zach Davidson (South Burlington, Vt./Berkshire School) scored his third goal of the game with 1:00 to play in regulation time to give visiting Castleton State a hard-fought, 9-8 victory over Southern Maine in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for the Spartans, and improved their overall record to 2-6. The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip to 3-4 overall.

Davidson led all scorers garnering six points on three goals and three assists. Sophomore Alex Green (Braintree, Vt./Randolph) had two goals and three assists while sophomore Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ontario) added two goals. Rookie goalie Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) had a standout game making 18 saves.

Senior Dan Thomas (Shrewsbury, Mass.) paced the Southern Maine offense with two goals and one assist. Classmate Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine) and junior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) each had two goals. Junior Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) stopped seven shots in the USM cage.

Southern Maine trailed 8-6 early in the fourth quarter before Thomas scored an even-strength goal with 9:27 remaining, and senior Willie Joy (Portland, Maine/Deering) tallied a man-up goal with 5:04 left to tie the score.

Castleton gained possession and killed much of the clock. The Huskies forced a turnover in their defensive third, but gave the ball back to Castleton seconds later. Davidson took charge and was able to beat Dussault from about 20 feet out for the game-winning goal.

Neither team was able to put any distance on the other in a closely played first half. The teams were even after one quarter, and Davidson's second marker of the day with 1:50 left in the second quarter left the score deadlocked at 4-4 after two quarters.

The Huskies received a pair of goals from Prince and Thomas 1:15 apart midway through the second quarter to take a 6-4 advantage. Senior AJ Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.) ignited a string of four consecutive Spartan goals, three coming in the third quarter, to put the visitors up 8-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Southern Maine will host Endicott College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.). Castleton hosts Green Mountain College in a rescheduled game on Wednesday (5:00 p.m.).
