New McKendree (Ill.) Program Added to WILA for 2012-2013

ALAMOSA, Colo.- The Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association is pleased to announce that McKendree University has accepted an invitation for the new Bearcats' women's lacrosse program to join the organization, beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year and 2013 season.

The addition of the Lebanon, Illinois institution expands the WILA women's contingent to six institutions, including Colorado based and founding members Adams State College, Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State College), Fort Lewis College and Regis University Rangers. Lindenwood University of St. Charles, Mo. was admitted for the current 2012 season.

Adams State, Colorado Mesa, Dominican University of California, Lindenwood and Notre Dame de Namur University (Calif.) are the five current men's members although Lindenwood will leave the men's fold after the 2012 season to join the ECAC.

As part of the agreement, all six women's institutions will play a home-and-home series with each other, resulting in 10 WILA contests (5 home, 5 away) for each squad to determine the WILA championship. As a stipulation of their respective memberships, Lindenwood and McKendree will work together in scheduling so that the Colorado based members will play both Midwestern opponents on the same trip.

McKendree, which is in the process of transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II, has an enrollment of 3,000 students. The Bearcats will add women's lacrosse to what will be a 21-sport sponsorship offering in 2012-13.

Most of McKendree's other sports will be members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The women's lacrosse program is under the direction of head coach Brittany Poist, a former University of Maryland standout and will play its games at Leemon Field.

The WILA was founded for the 2011 season to assist with game scheduling and student-athlete and program recognition for the mutual benefit of its members.
