Wood Leads No. 12 Tufts Past Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass.-Sophomore midfielder Beau Wood (Sherwood Forest, Md.) scored five goals and No. 12 Tufts tallied four times in each of the first three quarters en route to a 13-6 victory over Babson in non-conference men's lacrosse action tonight at MacDowell Field.

First-year Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, N.Y.) added two goals and six other Jumbos scored a goal apiece, while first-year Cole Bailey (Millersville, Md.) added a game-high three assists to lead the Tufts attack. Six different players scored a goal apiece for Babson, including senior Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, Vt.), who also added an assist.

With the win Tufts moves to 6-2, while Babson falls to 5-4.

Schoenhunt put the Jumbos on top just 43 seconds into the game, taking a feed from junior Sam Diss (Ridgewood, N.J.) from behind the cage and depositing it into the net for an early 1-0 advantage. Babson drew even just over seven minutes later when senior Jeff MacCune (Braintree, Mass.) picked up a groundball following a Tufts turnover and made a great run to goal, beating sophomore goalkeeper Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Following MacCune's score the Jumbos took control of the game, forcing Babson into 13 first quarter turnovers, and scoring three quick goals to build a 4-1 advantage late in the first stanza. Junior Matt Callahan (Acton, Mass.), senior Gordie Schaefer (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), and Wood scored within a 3:03 span, to build a three-goal lead with 3:00 to go in the first. Babson's Cam Caruso (St. Charles, Ill.) tallied his sixth goal of the season to draw the Beavers within 4-2 after 15 minutes.

A four-goal run to start the second quarter, highlighted by two more goals and an assist from Wood, and suffocating defensive pressure, helped Tufts take an 8-2 advantage with 2:21 remaining before halftime. Senior Kevin McCormick (Laytonsville, Md.) netted his 18th goal of the season 3:41 into the second to get the Jumbos rolling, before Wood tallied twice around Schoenhut's second marker, six-goal lead. Schmidt scored his 14th goal of the season 1:44 before halftime to bring the Beavers within 8-3 at the break.

The momentum proved to be short lived for the Beavers as Wood scored twice in the first 3:04 of the third quarter, and sophomore Peter Bowers (Contestoga, Pa.) netted his 13th goal of the season at 10:29 to help the Jumbos take a commanding 11-3 lead. Senior Tom Mallon (Manhasset, N.Y.) and junior Alex Patinkin (Providence, R.I.) tallied goals late in the third quarter around a man-up score from Tufts' Ben Saperstein (Hewlett, N.Y.), but found themselves trailing 12-5 after three quarters.

After a defensive final stanza that saw both teams go scoreless for nearly 12 minutes, sophomore Mike McStravock (Windham, N.H.) scored his second goal of the season with 3:06 remaining in the game before Geoff Sheasby's (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) tally for Tufts 38 seconds later provided the final margin.

Watkins made seven stops in three quarters for the Jumbos while junior Tyler Page (San Francisco, Calif.) and senior Steven Foglietta (Oceanside, N.Y.) combined for three fourth-quarter saves. Junior James Whalen (Westwood, Mass.) made a season-high 15 stops for Babson.

First-year Phil Russo (Middleton, Mass.) picked up a team-high six ground balls while sophomore Ryan Dawidjan (Worcester, Mass.) and junior John Clausing (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipped in with five and four ground balls, respectively. First-year Christian Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) forced a team-high four turnovers.

Senior Nick Rhoads (McLean, Va.) picked up game-high nine groundballs for Tufts, while Bailey picked up five, and sophomore Dan Alles contributed six groundballs and forced two turnovers.

Babson returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Manhattanville College in non-conference action starting at 1:00 pm
