Purple Knights Defeated by No. 8 Bentley

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's trailed just 6-4 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half against No. 8 Bentley during an eventual 13-7 loss on Wednesday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights are 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Falcons, who are the eighth-ranked team in the latest IWLCA poll, improve to 6-4 and 4-2.

Freshman Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) led the Purple Knights with three goals, while sophomore Caroline Casper (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy) and freshman Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each added a marker and one assist. Classmate Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) contributed one tally and four draw controls, while senior Sandy Palumbo (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made eight saves.

Senior Megan Wiggins (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) and juniors Taylor Bastien (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) and Cori Geiger (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) each tallied two markers and added two assists for the Falcons, while six others found the back of the net. Sophomore Ally Dorman (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) stopped eight shots and scooped up five ground balls.

The Falcons ran to a 4-0 lead by the 17:43 mark of the opening half before Boyer put the Purple Knights on the board at 13:59. Bentley responded and tallied two more goals to extend the lead to five, but Piper recorded a natural hat trick, scoring three goals in a 36-second span, to cut the visitors' lead to just two goals with 3:29 remaining in the half. Bastien scored with 19 seconds left to make it a 7-4 game.

The two squads traded goals early in the second half, with Casper tallying at 23:39 to make it a three-goal game again, at 8-5. The Falcons scored twice in 1:20 to give themselves a five-goal cushion at 21:32 before Jaskiewicz countered at 20:08. However, Bentley tallied three of the game's final four goals.

Saint Michael's travels to Saint Anselm College next Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. NE-10 contest.

COLCHESTER, Vt. Nine different players found the back of the net, four of them twice, as No. 8 Bentley posted a 13-7 win at Saint Michael's Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the Northeast-10.

Bentley led from start to finish, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 12 minutes, and led by as much as six on two occasions late in the game.

But in between Saint Michael's kept it close, getting to within three goals in the second half. That came after sophomore Caroline Casper scored at the 23:39 mark to make the score 8-5. But the Falcons scored four of the next five goals to push their lead to 12-6 with 6:25 remaining.

Three of those goals during the decisive run came in a quick four minute spurt, starting with sophomore Chelsea Larivee 's (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) goal at 22:52. Just over a minute later sophomore Carolyn Kynoch (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) scored her second of the game to make the score 10-5.

After Saint Michael's Melissa Jaskiewicz and Bentley's Dani Petrunich (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) traded goals, neither team scored for another 12-plus minutes. But that drought ended when freshman Amy Ernst (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) scored Bentley's 12th goal.

Sophomore goalie Ally Dorman (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) made eight saves to earn her sixth victory of the season.

Bentley will look to make it two straight when they host No. 7 New Haven on Saturday at noon.
