Hartwick Drops Empire 8 Match at Utica

UTICA, NY- Host Utica built up a lead of 8-1 and visiting Hartwick did not have an answer as the Pioneers won 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Hartwick's record is now 4-5 and 0-2 in the Empire 8, while Utica improves to 6-4 and 1-1 in the Empire 8.

Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) led Hartwick with two goals. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North), and Giuseppe Rice (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill) all scored once. Schaefer also added an assist along with Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset). Cassidy also had a team-high six groundballs.

Trent Thomas, Ben Winkler, and Joe Schoen all had three goals to lead the Pioneers. Scott Baron, Joe Scully, Justin Edelstein, Dan Duffy, Greg Geiss, and Brian Gable all contributed one goal each. Baron, Schoen, Thomas, and Winkler also had two helpers while Scully, David Craig, and Alex Rukavena added one.

The Pioneers scored the only goal in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Utica would score three times in the second quarter to go ahead 4-0 with 9:20 remaining. The Hawks would finally get on the board when Gropper found Schaefer for the score and the Utica lead was 4-1. The Pioneers would tack on two more goals and led 6-1 at halftime.

Utica would score the first two goals of the third quarter to lead 8-1. Following a penalty on Utica's Mick Krajacic, the Hawks would take advantage when Vaglica scored his fifth of the year to make it 8-2. Cassidy would follow that with a goal of his own and the game was 8-3 with 5:27 left in third.

Utica started the fourth quarter with two consecutive scores to lead 10-3. Both teams would exchange goals with Cassidy's second of the game coming with 7:14 left and Hartwick trailed 11-5. That would be as close as the Hawks could get as the Pioneers scored four straight times to close out the game and come away with the win.

Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St. Johns Prep) started for Hartwick in goal and had nine saves in 50:13 of playing time. He was replaced by Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) who had two saves in 9:47 of game time.

Wilson Mukrdechian had 11 saves for the Pioneers between the pipes.

Utica led in shots 37-27. Hartwick had a slight edge in groundballs, 39-37. The game featured a total of 18 penalties with both teams being flagged nine times. Hartwick was only 1 for 9 on the extra-man opportunity while Utica was 2 for 9. The Hawks committed 28 turnovers to the Pioneers' 21.

Hartwick will return home to face Empire 8 foe Elmira on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
