Late Maritime Rally Falls Short vs. Manhattanville

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 4, 2012) Maritime rallied from a four-goal deficit with three late goals, but the Privateers fell short of visiting Manhattanville, 10-9, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. Maritime falls to 2-10 on the season, while the Valiants improve to 2-8.

Sophomore Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) scored his first career hat-trick to lead the Privateers. It was Johnson's third goal with 3:02 to go in the fourth that made it a one-goal game.

The Privateers fell to a four-goal deficit, 10-6, at 12:42 of the fourth when Corey Steimel found the back of the net with his second goal for Manhattanville. However, Maritime fought back with a man-down goal by sophomore Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall) at 8:36, followed by two quick goals at 3:53 and 3:02 by sophomore Brennen Siele (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and Mike Johnson, respectively. The final opportunity was thwarted, however, as Valiant goalie Dom Poletto made a save on senior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) with 1:24 remaining and the visitors took over possession for good to hold on to the win.

Driscoll also had three points with a goal and two assists. Senior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) led all players with nine groundballs and six caused turnovers, while junior Joe Villarreal (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) was excellent in the faceoff circle, winning 12 of 18 draws. Wess Johnson and Siele both scored two goals for the Privateers, while sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) also found the back of the net. In goal, junior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made 14 saves.

For Manhattanville, junior Will Sahakian had a hat-trick and Poletto made an impressive 22 saves for the victory. On the defensive side, Poletto led the team with six groundballs, while five other players had two GBs apiece.

Maritime returns to action next Wednesday, April 11, when they travel down to Galloway, N.J. to take on Skyline-opponent Richard Stockton. Game time against the Ospreys is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Stockton Turf Field.
